Sound familiar? You are the sad product of a system that has brainwashed you (to vote against your own economic interests) for over three decades. Conservatives recently have referenced “taking the red pill”; the true irony is, taken literally, that would imply realizing that you have been the “sheep” all along, used to further the agenda of global elites like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk. Will you consider this for more than a second? I’m sure you won’t!

At the end of the day, what disturbs many of us, is the blind zealot-like devotion to one man. Stripped down to its essence this is an un-American movement. Our nations founding fathers would be revolted. I could never imagine putting another man’s last name on my truck, a huge flag (often positioned higher than the American flag) in my front yard, wearing his face on a t-shirt. As a man I worship nobody like that. It’s disturbing to see fellow Americans (good and well meaning people, I know) stooping to this level out of simple ignorance. Even more disturbing, considering Trump is just another global elite out to serve his own kind. Can you picture him shoveling graveling? Clearing brush? Backing up a bass boat down one of our steep canyon reservoir launch ramps? And yet blue-collar men support him. Why? He’s not like us.

I agree that big-city liberal elites are annoying. But, before he decided to con the rubes, Trump was a New York, Clinton-supporting elite. You really think that changed in his 60s? I genuinely pity you if you can’t see the con here. What do you think Elon Musk knows he will get from Trump? Why did Jeff Bezos cancel the Washington Post endorsement at the last minute? Would you like to see Eastern-European style corruption in our country?

The world is complex and it’s clear many of you don’t understand it. Reading has fallen off the last 20 years and, I would argue, this thread (as well the ascendency of Trump himself) is exhibit #A. Nuance is lost and propaganda reigns. Imagine for a second that half the odd-behaviors he displays were conducted by Harris or Obama. How would Fox News have reacted? I would encourage all of you to keep this level of cynicism and criticism with regard to Trump’s second term.

I don’t personally believe he will be a dictator. I think he’s too old. However the way he ended his last term was definitely unsettling (Mike Pence in particular). But the main reason people might think that is comments like this:

I study history a lot. That’s just not how American Presidents talk. Personally I wouldn’t support anybody who made statements like that (no matter how much I agreed with them). Maybe Nixon would talk like that behind closed doors, but in public? No way. Imagine what you might think if Obama had said that at his peak? Disturbed?

As for your latter question, it would depend on what you mean by a constitutionalist. There are originalists (the Federalist society Republicans) and “living constitutionalists” (who believe in a somewhat looser reading of the document). This can be interpreted as directly written powers vs. implied powers. Thomas Jefferson had a great quote about the earth belonging to the “living generation” and the absurdity of allowing the dead to “bind the living.” I think that applies to the originalists of today. As President Thomas Jefferson tried to limit his powers to those “directly written in the constitution” (after all his generation was still alive and this is how he interpreted the document). However, when presented with the opportunity to secure the Louisiana Purchase he went through with this (even though there was nothing in the Constitution that allowed him to purchase this land). Although it troubled him, he used the “implied powers” when it suited him. Was he wrong to do this? I don’t think so.

What are Trump’s proposed tariffs going to do to the price of fishing lures and gear? Unquestionably it will get more expensive. Trump said William McKinley and his tariffs are his inspiration, but by the time McKinley became President he mellowed out on tarrifs big time. They were not popular. They will not be popular next year.
