Extended Warranty......worth it?

Post by Fast Eddie »

So my Pro XS warranty runs out next month. Been receiving extended warranty info. They want 5 grand for 5 years. You can do less, but 5 years is the most. Any of you guys get the extended and have any problem using it.
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Hey Eddie, hope all is well. The cost = $83 per month, I say just cut out some of your trips to the Bass Hole and Sportsman's Warehouse and get the warranty :D

I had an extended warranty on a motorhome and I will never do that again. 3rd party insurers are nothing but crooks.
I believe the more you let a boat sit the more problems you have and it appears you use your boat often so I would roll the dice. Don't run it too hard but run it and do it year round.

Well, it is a 'Crap Shoot' but depends on how much you use your boat. First and foremost is to find out who is the warrantee company and then check them out. Complaints, BBB, Google. Next is just how many hours you use your boat a year. 2-3 times a week or 2-3 times a month ? The more you use it the more you may want to consider the extended warrantee. Have you had any problems so far, if more than a few, defiantly !!! BUT, you need to know just what they do or not cover before you sign up too !!!

I believe they're actually maintenance contracts. Better read the fine print.

let’s say you have a 2021 250 Pro XS ! used motor would sell for $15K with low hours ? a new 2025 motor runs $22K ! sell your motor and buy a brand new one for $2k more than an extended warranty !

My factory warranty was about to expire. I dont fish tournaments. I contemplated extending it on my SHO. Thought, "if it has ran good, why would it blow all of a sudden". A year later, at 200hrs, a head cracks. Wish I would of bought the extended YES plan.

Keep good clean Mercury oil to the fill level in it
Be sure it does not over heat
If you hear any alarms shut it down immediately and resolve the issue before the engine is run again
Keep up on the maintenance schedule by the book

Invest in on Board vessel view to display on your electronics
Or at the very least the vessel view gauge

Be sure the engine warms up before you blast off ex specially on cold mornings / days. Many are blown by hitting WOT at cold start

Nearly every failure is due to overheating or lack of lubrication. So many times I hear stories of blown power heads and the boater says “ yes it over heated but I had to get back to the dock so I ran home”
It only takes a few minutes to damage an engine due to over heat condition or lack of oil.

Do these things and chances are you won’t use the warranty
you need to do the maintenance yourself to be sure it’s done correctly or have a very good reputable mechanic
Buying extended warranty is something I wouldn’t do
Most times these engines blow up out of the gate or live a long healthy life provided they are well maintained
Mercury has been building outboards a long time.

I’ve had 7 Mercury outboards. Only had 2 with a warranty. 1 with a extended warranty. Used the extended warranty once. Injector’s replaced. It’s a gamble with any of them. First real issue on my 07 2 stroke was last week.
Compressor failed at 17 years old.
