Outboard Engine Servicing

Hey folks I recently purchased a really clean, low hours 2006 Ranger Z19 Comanche with a 225 Mercury Pro XS. The boat looks and runs great. I live in San Ramon and in a perfect world it won’t see a shop until the winter of this year or next for servicing. The two shops I’m targeting are Paradise Point in Stockton and C&C Marine in Modesto. Paradise point is 10 miles closer(minor issue)but apparently my boat was originally purchased at C&C because their name is painted on the transom and on the trailer. The original owner is from Fresno, so I assume it was originally purchased in Modesto, as opposed to Newcastle. My logical brain says C&C might be a better choice simply because their name is on the rig. Any thoughts and/or experiences with these two shops? Both have really good review history. According to my sources, there is new shop that opened in Brentwood that is supposed to have the former Boatmasters mechanics working there. They're called Boat Pros. Don't have contact info. Closer than both I think. But C&C has always serviced my stuff and I can't say enough about Greg, he's top notch.(others have issues, but bot me) Always busy though. I'd schedule my appointment now for early next year if I were you. C&C is busy.

There's always Gone Fishing Marine in Dixon too.

I completely recommend Greg at C&C Modesto. I’ve had my boat serviced there many times. He does a great job and gets things done right. I wouldn’t recommend Newcastle C&C (just my opinion). Wasn’t very happy the times I went there. Greg at Modesto will have you in and out in no time and have you back on the water. Boatmasters was also good when they were in Livermore but it was always a tough task getting an appointment since they were always booked up. Not sure how things are now that they’ve moved. Never heard anything about Paradise Point. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up on Boat Pros I was always a big fan of Boatmasters the last 35 or so years. Will be interesting to see how good Boat Pros is without Mike and Drew at the helm, both stand up dudes. A big thanks to all you guys for your input.

Ditto on C&C Marine in Modesto. Been taking my boat there for 10 years.
Greg is top notch and a straight shooter.
Yes they are busy and booked.
This time of year they are 4-6 weeks out.

Thanks for all your input fellas, you’ve been very helpful. Now that I’ve sold my beloved Evinrude, it’s obvious I have many more options with the Mercury.

I recommend that you learn to do it yourself. It’s all easy. Save a bunch of money.

I’m 65 years old and managed to change the starter myself on the old Evinrude and I only did that because of the backlog at shops. I’m nowhere near qualified to work on a modern electronic direct injected engine. I could probably change the lower end grease have never tried to change an impeller.

I agree with Dave! It's like he said, it's not too complicated. Get a OEM manual to start with. Plenty of people to help online as well.

Hey Mitch had did Bill do working on your big ranger over at his shop. He was going to work on my big ranger till I sold it from underneath him lol I couldn't pass up the deal I got he is still going to work on it. I give the guy that bought my boat. He going to work on my 76 monark
With 850 thunderbolt merc all parts I need are still available on line so im good with that he lives just 4 mile from my house here in the ranchos in madera . Im now looking at a 392 ranger now with and evinrude 175 it run really good solid transom and floors. Im going to carpet it myself if I buy it. Im also getting ready to re carpet my monark also. He also had 2 big bass boats from the bay area in his shop when I was last there one he was doing a motor exchange from current new evinrude to a a new merc. He also told me he sells new motors.

I’ve heard that too. They worked on my Evinrude Ficht for 24 years, one of the few places around here that will touch a Rude. When the 2000 Triton was about 20 years old the tilt/trim unit went out. The part new was $2,000 Mike and Drew sold me a good used unit for $500 worked fine ever since until I sold the boat this spring.
