Solunar bite times.

Post by Ronje »

These predicted bite times are fairly popular over here.

Seeing that the Moon-Up / Moon Down theory originator (Bob Wall) was from US, I guess they'd be pretty popular over there too.

I tried a little book called Anglers' Almanac in 2002-2004 to test its accuracy. Didn't work out after 3 years, so dropped it.

Solunar bite times sees to be something that a lot of anglers are very quiet about following but if you raise the issue by telling how they work for them. Its a cautious endorsement but once talking will give anecdotal evidence about their use.

I decided to have another look. A good hard historical look at what the guy who went on to market it (John Alden Knight) all those years ago had to say (in his own words).

Will put it up on here shortly in 3 parts. There was a lot happening in fishing circles at that time.

regards, Ronje.

The active rhythm periods for animals as applied to bass is different for each lake because their ecosystem is diverse. Solunar charts are based on moon phase and position overhead where you are located. The moons gravity controls the oceans tides therefore directly affecting that ecosystem. The moon phase affects animal migration and mating habits, including fish.
With that said predicting exact time periods can only be averaged, not specific to each lake, River or pond in a given region.
I suggest you look up my Cosmic Clock and Bass Calendar on line, uses moon, sun and water temperature to help understand bass behavior.

I look mine up by area code so that it takes my place on the planet { longitude/latitude} into account.

Sorry WRB. Never heard of the Cosmic Clock OR the Bass Calendar. Have heard about Rhythms though but I don't think they're the ones you are talking about.

I'd better put up Part 1 of what I found.

It looks like I can only put up 3 pages per post so it'll have to be spread over 3 separate posts.

Thanks Kelly

There was quite a bit of research going on with fish behaviour (not just bass) just as Knight was turning away towards other interests.

Before getting up a head of steam about Cosmic Clocks etc, can I suggest that we wait for part 3 of what I found? I think that Tom might find it interesting?

Part 2

Nearly there, Tom.

Pages 2 and 3 show where Knight's solunar theory went "off the rails".

He made the fatal but simplistic error in assuming that clams were so far down the evolution scale that they couldn't possibly have the internal ability to respond to changes, so the real trigger must be external and went looking for it.

Its certainly seductive for one to think like that. However, clams (and oysters) are certainly well and truly down the evolution path. They've had 500 million years of evolutionary experience so they've "learned" a thing or two.

Despite that, some still think like Knight and fall for the same simplistic trap about fish (a much more complicated organism than a clam).

Here we go. Part 3.

Tom (WRB), have a look at the references to Biological Clocks and Circadian Rhythms towards the last bit of this part and spread throughout the internet.

This is the scientific stuff that Knight needed to have concentrated on in 1936 only it wasn't around then. Anyway, he thought that he was dealing with an external stimulus and was never going to find what he was looking for that way.

Research into what Knight should have been looking for came within 2-3 years (early 1940s) of him turning away from searching for an answer and credibility.

Tom, I thank you for the invitation to look at Cosmic Clocks. However I must confess to not finding a lot in the supporting theories with which to agree.

I must also confess that its the closest attempt to biological clocks and circadian rhythms that I've encountered to date.

I'd like to make this suggestion. Pick out what you think that you agree with in these Solunar posts, apply your thinking
and see what the collective result looks like.

I've got another separate post purely about Biological Clocks and circadian rhythms to go.
