Best flippin/punching rod and reel
I have be punching a lot lately and I’m wondering some opinions on what rods and reels people run. I currently have a dobyns 805 with a curado 70 and a falcon 7’5 XH. I throw 1 1/2-2 oz in the 805 and 1 oz or less on the falcon. I do get wore out at the end of the day punching all day long. Mostly fishing the delta! Thanks

I use Phenix UMBX 703 xh with a curado 150 or a SIX 150. Light a Little shorter which works for me so I can work it all day.
Good for 3/8's to 11/2oz.

IROD Air 7.7 or 7.10 Bubs punch rod ! best flipping/punching rod made ! as far as a reel ‘ it’s Personal preference as far as reels go ! , you would just need to find one that’s comfortable match for the rod ! 8.5 gear ratio would definitely be a must have !

The Dobyns 805 Flip/Punch is a top choice for punching. Another rod to consider is the 766 Flip, it's what I personally use for punching. It's 6" shorter making it easier to balance, lighter, and more user friendly, I believe. The 766 is a powerful rod but has a nice tip making it easy to pitch and flip. I always used an 8 footer for flipping but once I built the 766 Flip it's all I use for 100% of my flippin/punching. The rod is balanced, powerful, and lighter than the 805 because it's 6 inches shorter.
Re: Best flippin/punching rod and reel
If you want to stick with an 8' rod, I recently went with a Dobyns Champion Extreme 805 Punching rod after fishing the Dobyns Champion 805 Punching rod for several years. I'm getting a little older and wanted to try something different. I pair it with a Shimano Chronarch 8;1. The Champion was awesome, but that Champ Extreme feels better to me. Same characteristics as the Champion series, but on a lighter better balanced feel. I think the reel helps contribute to this. I believe balance combined with quality is the key. Hope this helps.

Gary, how do you balance your rod/reel setup?Gary Dobyns wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 4:56 am The Dobyns 805 Flip/Punch is a top choice for punching. I balance the rod for the "hold point". Most anglers palm their casting reels and with spinning your hand is over the top of the reel. I have set balance points I shoot for with all models. You'll notice my SB & CB rods balance a bit more forward as these rods are fished down towards the water. Jig rods are fished more in upright direction. Just little things I think about with balance in mind.

We don't have a 6'6" in Med/Hvy spinning. We have only 7 footers.

Daiwa Elite Pitch/Flip reel looks interesting. Take Dobyns advice for the rod.

Re: Best flippin/punching rod and reel
I second the recommendation on the 805 Dobyns Extreme. I have one and love it. It’s lighter than the champion version and will lessen the fatigue factor if you are punching all day. I use it most when punching 1 1/4 oz and heavier. If I’m punching lighter weights I run the Dobyns Extreme 795 flip punch. Hope this helps.
