Delta's emergency drought barrier on the West False River

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In response to worsening drought conditions in California, today the Department of Water Resources (DWR) began construction on a temporary emergency drought barrier on the West False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The barrier will help slow the movement of saltwater into the central Delta and prevent contamination of water supplies for Delta agriculture and municipal supplies for millions of Californians.

“California is experiencing a second consecutive dry year and snowpack runoff into our state reservoirs has been far less than anticipated, so we are taking emergency actions to protect the state’s water supply and environment now,” said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. “DWR along with partner agencies is looking at all options to bolster the state’s drought response and mitigate drought impacts.”

Here’s a plan. Stop building houses in So.Cal and other California areas that can’t support itself with the resources within a few hundred miles? Instead the lakes are full down there leaving Nor Cal with severe drought conditions so people down south can over water their lawns and act like the supply is endless.

They're putting the barrier on the wrong side of the Delta, it needs to be on the 2 aqueduct canals going south.....

Just asking but could they build a wall like that at the 680 bridge instead would it keep out more salt water ? Would they be able to slow the out flow better? I’m really just wondering

They built that wall a few years back during a serious draught and later tore it down. I am sure it would be in the same place which was about halfway between where the West end of False River joins the San Joaquin and Fisherman's Cut.

Last time it was on false river between San Joaquin and Fishermans cut. More towards the San Joaquin.

The last time they did that it really disturbed the tidal flow patterns around Franks. The Old River cut off the main river became a funnel, and really tore up the tule islands. Same for Dutch Slough. And Taylor and Piper, too. Look for the grass in Franks to get so thick you can't motor at low tide.

So true Mark. It’s gonna change the game for the remainder of the year around the middle Delta.

They did this in 2015 in the same location, they said it was for the smelt,I smelled BS then and now.They had a chance to build a lock in the carcuinz straight near Crockett and never put it together. The Brons and the Newsome have screwed us in every way possible for the last hundred years.

So if you are in Little Franks and you want to motor west to the Sam Joaquin you wont be able to. You have to motor north in Fisherman's Cut to the San Joaquin and then head back south. It is certaily going to affect the tidal flow in and out of Franks. I agree with another post that the goop in Franks will probably plug up Franks really bad. Under normal conditions on low tide Franks is really gooped up. Now even on high tide it might be. I dont see how this is going to be good for Franks and the rest of the Delta.

Sounds like a desperate move. They haven't improved the overall water management situation, and now that things are getting worse they'll do anything just say they are taking action. Can't wait for Newsome to be out of office.

Truer words have never been spoken, I remember it ripping current through Old River headed south - like rippling the water rippon. The one consistent thing i have found with the Delta is - it's always changing - The fish will adapt and so will we. Nailed it....

IMO it's all about getting the freshest water possible to the pumps going south..almond trees dont like salt water
This "emergency barrier" is a test run to see how the water is pushed around the track..

If you guys have not took the time and read the link ash posted and your a lover of the delta it would be in your best interest to do so... look closely at the flow charts. You need to click on the Study Components section and fast viewing parts

IMO this whole program goes hand in hand with the twin tunnels..

I duck hunt in that area and seen them doing surveys, gps'ing and ground testing that area a couple years now... even had them roll up on us for a question and answer moment..

ONE thing to remember..It's all for the smelt !! That's what they tell us right ?

Anyone wondering how much this is costing us tax payers? I've heard it comes with a $30M price tag...this is the 2nd time they've put this in.

I was out running the boat yesterday and went to the mouth of false river. They were in the process of taking down the salinity barrier. There was a barge with a crane at work. 3/4 of it was deconstructed.
