Clear Lake info

Post by Moose »

Hi Guys, Havent posted here in a long time but I'm looking for a little help. I am going to be taking my son up to Clear Lake for a week in June as a graduation present. I have never been up there. I am looking for any suggestions on areas of the lake to concentrate on, any local colors I should stock up on, or just any general information anybody would be willing to share. I am just looking to get my son on fish, any big fish are just a bonus. He is not a big fan of dragging a worm around so I am hoping for reaction fish. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Any night fishing?

Provided the mats have some water under them frogging, flipping, and punching should provide some good action. I really like Koppers Live Target frogs in dark colors and beaver type baits for punching.

Like I said, look for mats. But if you're up north I'd concentrate on rocky point and the surrounding docks, state park, and tule island. If you're down south I like to hit the keys, usually really good summer frog fishing.

Lots of tournaments going on up there so folks might be tight lipped. Check the Western Bass fishing reports, Larry and Clum post often but I believe many of them are on night trips.

Tightlines!

Thank you. I appreciate it. We are staying in the Kelseyville area. Like I said I really want to make this a trip to remember for my son. He is 14 and finally.starting to show an interest in bass fishing and fishing tournaments with me, so I am not concerned with finding huge fish I just hope to find a fun way for him to catch fish. Froggin, flipping, or cranking are ways he likes to fish.

I believe my former client, CLum mostly fishes during the dark hours, whereas I always guide or fun fish the last 2 or 3 hours of light and then 3 to 5 after dark. CLum just doesn't get it - LOL!!! Lately, including the post I will do tomorrow (too tired now!!) - the best fishing seems to be the last hour or two before dark. I landed a 9 pounder at 7:30 pm last night. I really think the larger bass find the time before dark a better feeding time rather than the early morning with bass boat pressure everywhere. Obviously I am talking about the highly pressure months - March thru Oct. Just a thought.

Wait a minute, I fish a few hours before dark sometimes! You should get into a good top water bite around June. I like using the Whopper Plopper to cover a lot of water. I've done better with Luckycraft LV 500 lipless crankbaits during the day if you find some weed free areas. Senkos off of docks close to deeper water work well too. I'm partial to Green Pumpkinseed on the Senkos, Aurora Brown or Blue on the crankbaits, lighter colors like Sprayed Grass, Baby Bass ect. on plastics. This is for daylight hours 3PM on. As far as night fishing, that's my preference & the colors & techniques change. I post after every day on the water so Larry has more to read lol, & you can get my night inputs there! Good luck, I'm glad you take your son , my daughter's have outgrown fishing with Dad! If I'm in the area when you are, I'll be more concise if I'm doing well!
