Top IRS Official Will Take Fifth Before Congress

The IRS official over the division that reviews tax-exempt applications will invoke her Fifth Amendment right not to testify before Congress, her lawyer says.

Lois Lerner was scheduled to appear Wednesday before the House Oversight Committee. But in a letter to committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., her lawyer says she will not offer testimony under her constitutional rights against self-incrimination, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"She has not committed any crime or made any misrepresentation but under the circumstances she has no choice but to take this course," said the letter from Lerner's defense attorney William W. Taylor III.

Taylor says in the letter that the Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into why conservative groups were targeted for extra scrutiny and that Issa's committee has asked Lerner for an explanation why she gave "false or misleading information" four times in 2012.

Taylor asked that Lerner be excused from appearing since she will not be answering questions. Since she will not testify, Taylor argued that making Lerner appear would "have no purpose other than to embarrass or burden her."

The inspector general's report said Lerner was made aware in June 2011 that agents had used terms such as "tea party" and "patriot" to single out groups for additional scrutiny. She ordered that the criteria be changed.

In testimony to Congress, however, she never admitted the practice had taken place, even when asked multiple times by legislators.

The IRS itself admitted targeting conservative groups. Beginning to find out now some of these directives were coming fro D.C. the "low" level IRS employees are beginning to rat, they are tired of being thrown under the bus and they know criminal prosecutions are coming. Now, you are either really stupid or don't care if a powerful agency like the IRS is used to target political enemies of the administration in power, personally from what I have read you are both, stupid and don't care if abuse of power by the govt. is used against the party you disagree with. When I am out and about. There seems to be more reg. folks talking about things that are going on AND expressing disappointment with how things are.
A lot of Obama supporters that now regret voting for him. But you don't see that on the boards. I don't know if the ones on the internet are more diehard supporters or if my neighbors are just willing to express their disappointment.

As for jiggin, what he says counts for very little on a good day. But when he jumps out on the race thing. He needs to back it up. Too bad but hes not able to do that. He doesnt know me or my kind and it seems just likes to make up stuff

He did get one thing right. I do need to go fishing more. Hopefully I will soon.
Had a new knee installed on may 13th and am just starting to get around a little, Now I go back for the other one 24th of June. So I think it will be about mid Aug. before I get out fishing.
I wanted to get it done before any more changes are made in the health law. Since I have my own health ins. and have heard rumblings of rate increases coming . I wanted to have it done while I can still afford it.
