El Cap in Jan

Post by Bassackwardz »

I'm sure some of you tournament anglers have fished El Cap in the winter, I have a club tournament around the corner and could use a little advice. I have never fished the place nor do I have any experience fishing this time a year.... I am usually chasing the birds come October to end of January. I wanted to get a little experience fishing in a competitive manner so I joined a local bass club here in Orange County. If you guys could let me know water temp, clarity and what lures I need to concentrate on to get some fish in the boat, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks again for your help and expertise.

Fishing at El Cap has been great all winter. Better than expected. There are alot of shad in the lake and the Bass have been feeding heavy. Water temp is now 57. Water clarity is good but off color toward the very back "north arm" of the lake. There have been Bass both shallow along the rocky banks and holding on deep structure spots down to 40ft. The jig bite, crig bite, med dive crankbait, a rig, and ice jig have been the best for me. You can always catch em on a drop shot robo too. Good luck!
