Thanks Lynne!
Had alot of fun yesterday even tho the bite was fairly tuff and "kickers" were hard to come by..
Looking forward to the next event and hope the turnout is just as good!

Re: NBW DVL results...
That was a great turnout Lynne!!! Too bad about the miscommunication about the 3 bass limit. I read that Kwin said it could have been a 5 fish limit for this event. The 3 bass limit goes into affect for Dec, Jan and Februarys events only..
either way...nice turnout!!

Re: NBW DVL results...
for as much griping i've heard about the 3 fish bag limit, only 35% of the field had 3? Gotta get 3 before you can get 5. 3-fish bag will only last Dec-Feb and resume for the summer night tournaments as usual.
Re: NBW DVL results...
The three fish limit usually favors swinging for the fences with big reaction baits. The big bait guys will most likely dominate the standings this year, unless the fishing stays brutally tough. I pre-fished enough to know how tough it would be for this first tournament. I had a hunch the small stuff and time on the lake would save our butts this time. It did. I have never been so proud of a mediocre three fish limit. Its going to be an interesting year!

Re: NBW DVL results...
Going into a tournmaent with a 3 bass limit mindset is MUCH different then going into one with a 5 bass limit mindset...Theres quite a difference in the approach for the day, baits and techniques. With a 3 bass limit ESPECIALLY at DVL the 1st instinct is to go big all day for 3 bites.. But with the 5 bass limit, tournament anglers tend to fish for a limit then throw big for kickers.. I highly doubt that most of that 65% that didnt have 3 bass even bothered fishing for "keepers". My guess is that most of those teams fished bigger then they normally would have if the limit was 5 fish. Dont know if that makes sense..but it made sense to me ..hahaha...

Re: NBW DVL results...
the interesting thing is, after crunching the numbers from my latest e-fish effort in early October the Proportional Stock Density (PSD), which is the ratio of LMB larger than 12" that are also over 15" was 35%. Coincidence?, probably, but there is definately a larger ratio of smaller LMB from 2 good recruitment years of 2010-2011. Fishing could probably remain tough for a while until these year classes grow large enough to be tournament legal.

Re: NBW DVL results...
That is very interesting Kwin.. I love these studies.. If you ever need help on the shock boat or release boat let me know. Id like to help you and learn more about the population, growth rates, survival rates etc etc..
Where do you think the larger bass have gone? Died and sank to bottom because of tournament and public handling of them? harvested? Disease? I have noticed that there are ALOT of the 2 lb class fish when not too long ago there were mainly solid 3lbers as an average.
Do you think that those solid 3lbers have lost weight because of lack of suffifient protein (Bait fish)?
Have you done a study on the average size of the bass now in 2012 as compared to lets say 2008-2010?? That would be interesting as well.

Re: NBW DVL results...
Way too many of those 3-5lb fish have been ridiculously skinny over the last two years Pete. They must die and sink to the bottom. They are already skeletons. I think fishing pressure is the smaller of the problems. Lack of shad (bait) is probably the main problem. I don't know if they can fix this problem with stipers in the lake.
Re: NBW DVL results...
what makes me sad is it sounds like the lake is going through what Casitas did the last few years. Up and down cycles. With Stripers you may not see the donkeys as you did before but the lake should rebound on the 3-4lb fish...hopefully chunky.
Casitas was pumping out 3-5lbers in 22-24" bodies...it was gross!
Give it time and it should rebound with footballs....Casitas did!

Re: NBW DVL results...
I wonder if tilapia would be a better food source for the largemouth. DVL doesn't get very cold in the winter and tilapia breed in a hurry.
Re: NBW DVL results...
there is no shortage of food in DVL. My latest E-fish effort resulted in the most fish I've ever sampled (6 times of the 2008 effort) with 50% being BG and most of those 2-4 inches. There were also inland silverside EVERYWHERE, the water looked like there were sparklers going off. There are also crayfish, sculpins, small redear and crappie too. Too many (anglers) get locked into shad as the be all-end all regarding availble forage, there are other options, and especially for LMB and their adaptive capacity.
Tilapia will compete with Centrarchids, so no they would not be a good addition.

Re: NBW DVL results...
So, do you have an opinion as to why there are so many skinny fish Kwin? You're right, I see bait up shallow, but it always seems to be tiny and I rarely see deeper bait balls on my electronics anymore.Kwin wrote:there is no shortage of food in DVL. Re: NBW DVL results...
My DVL Background- Local, since DVL opened. Between pre-fishing, fishing every team circuit, night derbies, special events, fun fishing at DVL (about 9 years) and networking/info sharing with many other DVL locals... My opinion- The LMB are doing just fine! Locals are still catching giants (over 8 pounders) and good numbers of 2-5 pounders. Last Spring, locals caught and saw (on beds) more 8-13 pounders than ever. In fact, DVL had a few of the biggest 5 bass tournament limits in the entire United States last season (Pre-fish and fun fish days 5 bass limits were even bigger - 30 pound bags were common for many of us locals). DVL even had better average 5 bass bags than the lakes on the BASS Elite series and FLW Tour.
Mix it up and keep an opened mind. Fish are shallow, suspended, and deeper than the norm (plus 40 feet). Yes, some days (like the last week's NBW team event) it is tuff - JUST LIKE EVER OTHER LAKE! During my pre-fish a few days before that NBW event my big fish was a 9lber with a ton of other quality tournament fish (my team partner could be heard saying, "Too Easy..."). No BS, DVL is still a premier LMB lake!! The biggest problem I have observed is not the dreded Stripers or lack of bait/food, it is the fact that for the last 3-5 years during the LMB spawn the water level is dropped while LMB are bedding. I'm not a fish doctor or biologist, but that can't be good. When I DON'T see shad or bait balls I don't panic, I just change my lures and presentation. Dumb it down... Football jigs, Texas riggedsoft baits, the C-Rig, bluegill and baby bass patterned jerkbaits and swimbaits get bit well at DVL. I have had bass in my live-well cough up some giant red crawfish!!
However, I do start to panic in the spring during the LMB spawn when I don't see bass fry. Let our DVL bass spawn in peace and stop messing with the water levels in the Spring!! I hope this post answers a few questions and puts fellow weekend warriors at ease. Remember, DVL has been open every day to the puplic (7 days a week) since 2004, with a team/club tournament there just about EVERY WEEKEND. Despite that, it is still the best bass lake most of us will ever fish - PERIOD. I don't post a lot, but thought this was important. If you see me on the water at DVL, have questions or want to just share "fish stories", I'm in the yellow/silver wrapped "Anglers Marine" Ranger. T. Lain

Re: NBW DVL results...
I hear ya Tony. I see you on the water many of the days that I am there. DVL is a great place and I still catch plenty of big bags also. It just seems very odd that there are so many skinny 3-5lb. fish.
Re: NBW DVL results...
the fish are dieing becuase they are being caught from 60-100 ft deep doesnt make a diffrence if u weigh in 3 or 5 stupid rule why not just do a double weigh in lol
