caught my first pike yesterday!!!

Post by yjjustforme »

only thing is, it was of them weired sacramento kinds  that blew up on a buzz bait last night. not sure how many of them are out here on the delta but of all the years ive been fishing the delta this is my first squaw fish ive ever seen in person let alone caught. the strange thing is is that i had another one blow up on a spook and ended up shaking free. when the first one jumped i thought it was a carp cause it was so long and how dark it was getting last night.
i have no idea how big these things get but they put up a good fight. :D

Yup, Sacramento Pike Minnow is what it is. Grew up on the American and caught dozens of em upwards of 5 pounds.
Used to throw a broken back Rebel in the shallow coves and back waters just to target these junkers.
And if you can catch a few in the 6 inch range on a piece of worm, big stripers love em.

Man you scared the hell out of me!!!!! when I first saw your post I was thinking, "Northern Pike!!??!! There goes the nieghborhood out here in the Delta. Thinking back to Lake Davis, if the Northern Pike ever reaches the Delta the eco system would be in more trouble lol."

Yep, the Sacramento Pikeminnow/Squawfish is one of the larger species from the minnow family and they're very common here. I've caught these minnows up to four pounds in the Delta and like davet, also caught 'em in the American. Most of my Squawfish were caught on hardbaits (Rapalas, jerkbaits) but they've also hit Senkos...

This has me curious. About 18 years ago I netted a "delta pike" that my dad caught on a spinner bait in big break. My dad at the time was good friends with Bobby Barrack and he identified as a delta pike. He also went by another name that's a bit obscene but it was a reference to its soft, tissue-y mouth (no teeth). Here's the thing that has me curious, it weighed 8lbs. It was really long too. I was only able to get half of it in the net. Did we catch a record size pikeminnow? Or was this another species of fish? Bobby didn't see it firsthand but was able to fill in the blanks when we described it. It does look similar to the OP photo but I am also going off a distant memory. Any ideas?

Very common on the Delta. I have caught 100's of them up to 7-8 pounds. What took you so long? They fight like hell for about 15 seconds, then just give up. LoL

So they do get up to 8lbs. Cool. When I hear minnow, I think very tiny lol.

They get bigger than 8 lbs...I've personally seen two over 12 lbs, one being about 15. Go throw a swimmer at Pardee...you'll see for yourself.

Are these in all of our waterways? Ive caught something that looks just like it at melones. Only difference was it had a black lateral line. We had 5 for almost 40 lbs.

We catch huge ones at lake Sonoma especially in the fall when the bait stacks up.

They're one of our native minnows and are pretty extant. See the map and watershed listing:
