low oil sensor beep with lots of oil

Post by hawghustler »

Im sure Ive read some posts on here before about guys having problems with there low oil sensor beeping even when the resevoir in the cowling is full as well as plenty in the 2-3gallon oil tank in the boat. I run a 1998 200hp Optimax and its driving me crazy trying to fix this problem. Im from San Diego but will be up at the Delta until May 14 and would love to fish without this ongoing headache. HELP!

Give your oil tank bubble a few pump's before you launch it will help.

My Envinrude did the same thing all the time and 11 year's later it run's fine but the alarm quit going off.

Sometimes it's the sensor float going bad in the reservoir. About a $170 fix.

Take off the cowling and fill up the oil reservoir on the motor. The secondary reservoir cap has the sensor in it, when you run low on oil the reservoir doesn't fill back up correctly.

Fill it and you're be fine.

hes is dead on, order the oil tank it takes about an hour and a half to change, i had the same exact problem with my 02 opti. replaced oil tank and havent had an issue sense.
if you do the work yourself, make sure the resevoir you just changed is absolutly full before starting, i actualy took the oil from the oil resevoir and pored it into the new one and toppped it off.

hope you get it fixed soon

Check the pickup screen in your main oil tank(hull)pick up line. I think you will find it is plugged with a waxy residue. The pickup screen is VERY fine and the parafin that oil companies use in their oil will coagulate and plug that sucker up. It doesnt take much of a low level to cause the sensor to start beeping. On my Merc, only an inch down and it would go nuts. The plugged screen flows VERY slowly, even under max pressure from the crankcase. I had to use about a whole can of brake/contact cleaner to get it clear after taking it apart.

All the other guys ideas are definitely valid, but this is cheap, easy and common to check first. :)

Good luck

+1 on the sensor float........started as a low oil beep and got to a point to where it would just stay on.

Fairly inexpensive and quick fix and better safe than sorry.

The wires on the cap of the small tank on the engine twist and after a while will short out. About a $50 part and easy to replace,
