palomar knot on dropshot hook
palomar knot on dropshot hook
I can't seem to figure out why when I tie this knot (and I tie it the same way every time, line goes through the hook eye with the hook facing me, I have also done it with the hook facing away) that the hook ends up upside down. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I know that when it does I just put the tag end through, no problem there. I just want it to be consistent. Anybody?
Re: palomar knot on dropshot hook
Pass the "bight" line folded in half, through the eye of the hook from the top side of the hook. Once it comes out the bottom side of the hook eye tie an "over hand bend" on the top side of the line above the hook. Pull enough of the bight through the knot to pull the hook through it. Pull tight and drop the tag end through the eye from the top side of the eye.griz01 wrote:I can't seem to figure out why when I tie this knot (and I tie it the same way every time, line goes through the hook eye with the hook facing me, I have also done it with the hook facing away) that the hook ends up upside down. Re: palomar knot on dropshot hook
This is how I have always done it. Tie a palomar knot with the line first going through with the hook facing me. After the know is tied, take the TAG LINE and bring that through the hook (again with the hook facing me) and pull tight. Sometimes you have to move the knot so its actually in the hole of the hook and when you pull on the line the hook will always be facing up. Never had any troubles with that. Give that a shot. The TAG LINE part is the KEY!!

Looks like offduty beat me to it, but basically the same thing. Just remember the TAG LINE part

This knot technique looks like it would great with braided line.

Re: palomar knot on dropshot hook
With the hook point facing away from you; run the line through the hook eye towards the hook point, then back through the the opposite direction creating the loop, or make a loop and pinch it the pass through the eye as mentioned. Make the over hand knot counter clockwise, over and under. Pull the loop snug, rotate the loop so the back of the hook passes through the loop first. Wet the knot and pull the tag end tight. The hook point should be upright.griz01 wrote:I can't seem to figure out why when I tie this knot (and I tie it the same way every time, line goes through the hook eye with the hook facing me, I have also done it with the hook facing away) that the hook ends up upside down. Re: palomar knot on dropshot hook
For me, the key is always in the STEP #3 & #4 in Tin Cans post. You must make sure that the loop that ya pass the hook through has no twists in it and are parallel as shown in the picture. Then once I proceede to step #4 and have pulled the hook thru the loop with no twists, partially tightening the knot bu not all the way, I grab the knot and hook eye between my forefinger and thumb, so that the hook is pointing up the main line, which exits to the top of my fore finger and thumb, and carefully pull the tag end down towards the bottom of my fore finger and thumb. I'll then pull each a littel bit at a time sinching the knot, all the while my fingers have the hook pinched in the proper position so that the hook ramains in the upwards position. Once the knot is tight against the hook eye, I'll grab the top line with one hand, the bottom line with the other and pull tight.
Most of the time this works for me, if not, I cut it and do it again till I git it right.

Re: palomar knot on dropshot hook
as long as you bring that tag end of the line though the TOP of the hook it will always ride upward...the correct way. I used to have the issue of hook sideways or upside down. Then years ago when I was shown the tag end trick I never had issues anymore and much better hook up ratio!
