ABA Delta 12/18/10 Postponed

Post by RipnRog »

I am postponing this Saturdays ABA due to weather.

40 to 50 mph winds are not safe and I will not send boats out in it.. I know not everyone reads the internet so I asked russos to post this on the door today.

I would ask any of you to please pass the word....

Safety is always first...

You are making the right call Rodger. Heavy rain is one thing but with the WIND gusts they are callling for would just make it miserable for everyone...... 8)

Rodger,
I respectfully have a little different take then the previous posters on the decision to postpone the ABA Delta tournament on Saturday. First off, we did fish this morning not knowing that the tournament was postponed/cancelled which was my fault because you very clearly posted that information Thursday morning and we just didn't see it. Thanks for the early post! A lot of us however are wondering where you got the 40 to 50mph winds from. All of the weather services that we've seen the last few days indicate a 10 to 20 south wind with gusts to 30mph over night and diminishing Saturday morning.

Don't get me wrong Rodger and others, safety should always be the number one factor and your decision would and is commendable if we were to have 50+ hurricane force winds. Maybe I'm just an old salty dog when I say we don't cancel tournaments on the Delta because of medium to high winds and heavy rain...that's what we get in December and January. ABA should consider that when scheduling tournaments during these months in the future. I know my dear friend Gene Buchholz cancelled the Hook tournament on Sunday which he has a different set of circumstances of less experienced folks some with smaller boats and younger kids...the heavy rain part would not be fun for them.

Anyway, you and your staff run a great circuit Rodger and I do respect and appreciate the responsibility you have for the safety of your participating anglers which now we'll be forced to go fun fish or something like it tomorrow. I never said that it would be a fun tournament but you get what you get this time of year!

Merry Christmas!

I agree on the safety side but 2 days before? I've never seen a tournament canceled except for maybe the night before or the morning of. Weather is unpredictable and if you knew 2 days out what it was going to be .... please tell me tonights lotto numbers

People plan their vacation days, family events and budget their money to go to your tournaments... maybe pulled the trigger too soon?

I agree that the safety of the anglers should come first, but to call it 2 days before the tourny was a little premature. Like Bill said, I didn't see any forcast predicting 40-50mph winds. A little rain and wind is what we're used to here on the river at this time of the year. I've never seen a tourny canceled so far in advanced. I agree it's going to rain hard over the next week but I'm still fishing!

Roger I think you certainly did the right thing. I would much prefer to know I am not fishing 2 days prior than find out late Friday. All the prep work and anticipation avoided by the advance notice that the tournament is cancelled. You do a great job and should take no heat for your decision.

all future bass tournaments to be held in a dome

It might be too hot, too cold, too windy, or too wet.

Fact is bass tournaments have always been out in the weather and all of us have fought the elements... In my opinion, the heat is the worst element of all and all hot tournaments over 90 degrees should be canceled for the safety of the fish and the anglers...please consider this Rodger in future tournament planning.

Weather currently in French Camp = sprinkles with a light breeze

Well Dave currently here is Sacramento there is no Freaking way in Hell I would be on the water and I was schedlued to fish this morning..............Gusting Winds, rain sideways and not safe conditions.

Have you ever been in a sitiation under these weather conditions were you could have possibly lost your life or been in danger??

I have twice!!!!!! once we saved a life, every one knows this story.

The other time Scott SChumacher and I were in a A/C on Folsom and all hell broke loose, guess what? our bilge pump went out and that freaking Ranger filled up fast !!! all the way to the sides of the console. We could not get on plane and had to ride it out in 5-6 foot swells back to ramp.

We got lucky that day but boy was I scared........This weather today is not safe for being on the water!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not true, It is very nice out, very little to no rain and very mild wind here near the delta.

I know it is easy to be a "monday morning quarterback" and I appreciate Rodger trying to be proactive, however you can never believe a weatherman, especially 2-3 days before a event.

IMHO opinion, the folks that are happy about the delay were not on fish and the ones that are not happy were on em or thought they would be.

Well I have to say it was a good call. I agree we fish during the weather no matter what. I pre-fished Thursday and was really looking forward to Saturday. It was a good call because it came early enough to make different plans. I am sure you thought about this long and hard because of all the people that post negative comments on the boards. Some of them more than likely would not even be fishing the ABA.
Sometimes in life we have to make choices before knowing the results. As a TD you have to make choices that some do not like. Yes it may be dead still all day today on parts of the Delta, but then again some places maybe howling hard.
I can remember an organization that canceled two tournaments in one season, at the last minute due to lack of sign ups. On both instants, my work had flown in a replacement for me during weekend jobs. Plus having to cancel hotels and travel. In this case it was wrong but no one complained on the boards. Calling a tournament due to PREDICTIVE weather is a different case. Mother Nature has a mind of her own and we can just hope weather men get it right.

Jeez guys, you can't please everybody. If he had waited til this morning and called it, you would have scores of people whining about "didn't he check the weather 2 days ago? Could have saved me a long drive!"
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. He made the right call.

Hey RipN - You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. You made the best decision you could and I know you had the best intentions with it. As an angler, that's all I can ask... that you do what YOU think is best for the event. You are the tournament director and you aren't making decisions because they are fun... just the fact you were thinking about the safety of the anglers FIRST - regardless of if it ended up Blue bird and gorgeous or a blizzard out there - you made the right call, because it was the safest and the one YOU as the TD saw as the best for the event and the anglers.

My hat is off to you - I know making a decision like that wondering which way to decided is tough enough without worrying about what's going to get the least amount of complaining. Just make the best INFORMED decision you can and it sounds like you did just that!

Thanx to those that agreed with the decisionn and sorry to those that didnt. I read a few different weather sites and made the call. I did this after I recieved 3 phone calls from anglers Thursday morning. all 3 anglers asked me to cancel the tourney. I learned a few things from this decision and I will use them in the future if we have terrible weather predicted.

Again thanx to those for the support and sorry to those did not like the decision.

Hope to see you all next month and happy holidays.

Rodger....
One thing you probably already learned, is no matter what you do you'll never make the right decision in everyone's eyes. It's easy to second guess someone when your butt is not on the line, the decision you made was the right one. Had you gone ahead with the tournament and there was an accident, the forum would be full of armchair quarter backs and you'd have to end up living with your conscience.
