Best Fluorocarbon line

Post by Peter48 »

I don't want to start a war but I currently use 6lb Trilene 100%. When I cast it, it comes off my spinning reel like a slinky and I hate it. I have tried stretching it and running it behind the boat to get rid of the coils and nothing works.... Anyone know what Fluorocarbon line I can use to fix these issues? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Give Blackwater / TORAY upgrade 100% flouro a try. It's a little pricey but you asked for the best! Now would be a good time to try it since you can get it on sale at many tackle shop black Friday sales!

Maybe you need to change the line due to age or perhaps the reel is too small. Im not sure which, but 100% is all I use and I have no problems at all. If your in the south bay I will re-spool new line for ya at no charge.

Hopefully your spinning reel has a large diameter spool. If it doesn't, get one. I use Daiwa 2500 size reels and I replace the T shaped handle knob with an aftermarket I shaped knob so that it doesn't feel like I have a saltwater reel in my hand. Small diameter spools will never handle any fluoro. very well. I also use Trilene 100% and it seems like my last spool of 6 lb. is much stiffer. I hope this isn't the trend. A little softer and smaller diameter line that you might like is the Bass Pro Shops Fluorocarbon. I put it on an old Daiwa SS700 with a small spool and it does well. Remember you give up durability when you go with a softer line. It seems like every fisherman is always looking for a super soft line with great abrasion resistence. I'm not sure it will ever exist. Do a new post with a survey of different fluoros. and start trying the highest rated lines. As soon as you find one you like they will change it!

It would be my guess you just have too much line on the spool..I have been using the 100% in both 6 and 8 on my spinning reels and have no problems, unless I put too much on..

This is tough because based on line size and how much you are willing to spend it varies.

If money is not an option then get Tatsu. Awesome stuff. I've only used the 4lb but its good.

Sunline is also amazing. Used 4-7lb test.

The higher lb test Berkeley 100 percent is good stuff and "reasonable" very strong. 12lb plus.

Try some lighter braid and a fluoro leader.

I'm with Steve Reed on this one.........Sunline is all I trust. Before I get started let me tell you that I've literally tried all of the lines out there from 100% to Seaguar to Toray, and for the record I am not sponsored by Sunline. Here is some insight from someone who has tested and has an unbiased opinion.

Sunline is smaller in Diameter and I feel it has more abrasion resistance than Toray, 100%, Gamma. I've been using the Fc sniper in 4 to 7lb for dropshotting and the 10 on up in the shooter for Texas rigging, Jig, and Carolina rigging. If you would've seen what I've gotten fish out of last year at Diamond Valley fishing the "Jungle" I don't think anyone would use any other line. Most of the lines today are price pretty similar and I pay for it just like everyone else and whether you fish tournaments like I do or just fun fish why have an inferior line between you and possibly the "Game Winner"

On another note If your tying a Palomar knot with Fluorocarbon your only one swing away from being the most pissed off guy on the lake. I learned that a long time ago that Palomar and Fluoro don't go good with eachother for some reason. Believe it or not the knot I've had the best luck with is a simple Improved Clinch knot. Wrap around the line 5 times and through the bottom hole and through the top and wet the line and cinch. It's been money for years. I know everyone has these crazy knots they tie. Improved Clinch is quick and extremely strong. MP

The best of anything is always going to be someones opinion vs someone else. Like others I have tried most brands of FC line and like Sunline , however stopped using it due to 3X price inrease the past year.
Knot strenght is a problem and so is memory with FC line; the reasons we are trying so many different brands to resolve those issues.
1. use a good line lubricant.
2. tie knots carefully; the Uni, SD jam and improved clinch all work.
3. re-tie often; FC line stretches and weakens as a result.

I would suggest trying a good FC hybrid; new P-Line Fluoro-Clear for example is small diameter with good knot strength, lower memory. There isn't a FC line panacea on the market that I know of.

I use fluorocarbon on some of my baitcaster's, mainly for it’s lack of stretch and improved sensitivity. The trade off is increased memory and stiffness (sensitivity) which unfortunately decreases it's manageability, especially on spinning reels. I've found the fluorocarbon lines that claim to be more manageable will also have much more stretch and less sensitivity, might as well go with a good monofilament and save yourself some money. There are tricks to making it easier but I don't have the patients for it, like Mark, I use a small diameter braid (10lb) with a fluorocarbon leader on most of my spinning rigs and love it.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I STARTED USING LINE CONDITIONER. LINE BUTTER IS THE ONE I CHOSE. IT WORKED FOR ME. JUST 1 OR TWO SPRAYS SHOULD WORK. DON'T PUT TO MUCH ON.

Hey Peter, flipit and toddmc are on the ball. If you're using a spinning reel that's a 2500 or larger then 6# Trilene 100% should not be giving you any problems. I fish a Shimano Saros 2500 with 8# Trilene 100% and I've never had a problem. One thing to remember when spooling up is that the filler spool needs to be giving line out so that it goes onto the reel the same way it came off.

You're getting lots of good advice here Peter. One last thing I would do is drag the line behind the boat at idle for a few minutes with nothing on it at the end of the day, or whenever needed. Take a small rag covered in line conditioner and hold the line you are reeling in from behind the boat in the rag as you are reeling it in. This will clean the line, lubricate it, and take out the twist. If you spray the line conditioner directly on the spool, don't use too much because it can drip in the bearings and cause problems.

Probably the best advice you can use and not have to buy any new reels. I use Maxixma Florocarbon and spool it just like godshippy said to do. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!!!!! Good luck

i was out fishing off a pier Monday night. My bother and cousin got into a school or perch up to about 3 lbs. some pretty nice slabs. we fishing a good reef made bolders and concrete barriers... i was using my dobyns 701 spinning rod w/ 28lb samurai braid topped off with 6lb seguar florocarbon invisx...

i was using live grass shrimp on a size 4 finesse hook. i know i know..bait, saltwater. perch..... atleast i was fishing and not wishing right??........

i was using a drop shot rig to fish this bait anound the rocks just to avoid as much as snags as possible. Let me just say this we did not loose 1 single fish. at first i was freaking out since i was using 6lb test...i would walk the fish over to shore and either my brother or my cousin would walk down of the peer to shoreline to pick up the perch.
by the end of the day i actually dead lifted up a few of the perch from the water up to the rail and over into the pier. I was suprised after fishing aroung all these rocks and reefs i did not loose a fish..

as far as the knot i was using i was using a loop not. when fishing for bass i am using a san diego and inproved clinch knot. i read what mike said about the polomar knot, thank you mike for sharing your experience, i know i have read up on a little of your fishing experience. so i will just take your ino and run with it.

as far as the best florocarbon goes, i can say seguar invisx and abrasx will not let you down. FYI i always retie especially with light line after i get a nice / decent fish.... that is a must with any line though..
