caught a good one

Post by Mattlures »

Ok so I am out bed fishing the other day and I find a good one. I toss my gill in there and she is sitting about 2-3 ft away. The male is irate. He is thrashing the bait like a dog and his toy. Its prety funny watching him. After about 10 minutes you can see the poor guy is getting frustarted.
But lookie here the Mrs is starting to get agitated too. COOL! I know its coming soon now but as I bring in my gill I get snagged on the only branch that could get me. NO!!!!!!!!So with my bait still hung up I grab another rod. This one has a billed sinking hard gill on it. Not exactly my first choice for bed fishing but It I figured it was close enough to the soft gill that she had just nipped at. Soo I toss it in, let it sink about 10 ft past my target and then I bring it in right towards her face. When I get about a foot away I let it drop right towards her mouth. What did she do? what could she do? Well out of defence she opened her mouth and sucked it in! 10lbs 11 oz. Lake Jennings

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I did wanna ask you a quick question - I caught a fish last friday that was 25.25" long x touch over 22" grith...based on your experience what would you estimate a fish like that would weigh in SoCal?
I was just on my tiny 9' boat and did not have a scale as I was just doin a quick 90 minute fish trip with my 3yr old and wasn't expecting anything over 4lbs (as I usually catch 2-3lb fish where I was fishing). Thank you.
It's my first big bass so was trying to get a good idea of weight.

I would guess between 12-13 but its hard to guess without seeing a pic, plus it depends on how you measured the fish. In any case you caught a BIG bass

Last year I caught one at Don Pedro that was 27" long and 22" around and weighed on 3 different scales and they were all over 15 lbs. So yours would be close to the same range, 12-14 lbs.

Turkeyman,

The the mathmatical formula goes like this:

Length X Girth Squared then divided by 800. So yours looks like this: 25.2 X 22 x 22 =12196.8 divided by 800 = 15.24 pounds. Nice fish brother!
