Pedestal seat stuck

Post by pd »

Any ideas on how to get my seat out would be really appreciated. It's been stuck for years and I really want it out. I can swivel it back and forth at the base but can't do much else.

I have had to remove several of these over the course of doing as many boat carpet jobs.

Spray it with some Liquid Wrench or WD-40 and let it soak for a good 30 min. Then take a rag and a pipe wrench, wrap the rag around the base of the post to prevent jaw marks from the pipe wrench and turn. It may take a few tries but it will come out.

Good Luck

Try to use soap on it and a pipe wrench. Yes the wrench will mess up the aluminum on the post but you dont have much of a choice. do not use petroleum based products(wd-40) on the sleeve, it may be made of plastic and the petroleum will cause it to swell and make it even worse. I used a pipe wrench on mine and had to basically unscrew it...and it was not easy. Once I got mine out I replaced the sleeve and solved the problem... Good luck

The seat was stuck in my Ranger for 10 years. Finally I had enough and wanted a full deck front and back.

Liquid wrench worked the best for me, use the whole darn can and let it sit. I sprayed the heck out of it and let it sit for a few hours. I used a pipe wrench with a 3ft handel + a cheater bar and used so much force the seat post started to collapse, if it is stuck bad there is no salvaging the seat post. I used a rag at first put the wrench would slip whe I would start to tork on it. You might have to spin the post over and over as yo apply upward pressure but it will come out. I think I spent about 30 min per seat getting those things out.

I tried everything elese, even tried using my foklift to pull the post out and it started to lift my boat off the trailer.

Pd,

Here's how I removed my stubborn pedestal:

-apply some WD-40 around the seam of the pedestal and let it set for 30 minutes as noted on previous post.

-Engage the release button on the pedestal and rotate left or right
applying an upward force. It's easier to have another person pulling upward while you engage the button and attempt to rotate the pedestal.

In most cases this should work as rotating the pedestal should free the seize fit between the base.

If this doesn't work try this approach. You'll save your pedestal from and scratches or tool marks.

-get yourself a 2x4 and cut the length just slightly higher than the base on the seat to deck.

-cut another section that measures 2 x 4 x 6 long (this is your base)

-place the short section of the 2 x 4 on the deck under the seat

-wedge the 2 x 4 x "X" (long section) between the short block and base of the seat.

-engage the release button on the pedestal and use a mallet/hammer and hit the long section of the 2 x 4.

-The axial force of the long 2 x 4 should prior release the pedestal.

Good luck!
