DIY – Some Like it Hot!

Post by Marty »

There are many solutions to the same outcome. Here is mine for keeping my hands warm while fishing. I go with the theory of warming the air next to my skin and wicking the moisture from my body. One of the best natural materials is wool. Wool works if dry or wet (granted it works better dry) but still holds the warmth of you body if wet.

Keeping the hands warm while fishing is a unique situation because you need the feeling of your fingers to feel the bite and control your spool on our reel but the fingers are the first to get cold. The biggest problem is you can’t have that feeling of the bite with the fingers covered or control the line on the spool while casting. Yes you can ware full fingers gloves that are water proof going to one spot to other and taking them off to fish hoping to move to the next spot just to warm your hands.

Myself I like putting a set of gloves on and leaving them on until I don’t need them anymore. I started getting ready for this winter last Spring by going and buying wool gloves on sale – I mean like $3 bucks a pair and I pick up at least 3 sets. That way when I’m on a long tournament I let the ones I use that day dry in the room while using the other set. If during the day I get the gloves soaked I just wring them out and put them back on. The only way some of you will believe that wool will keep you warm while wet is you have to experience it.

This is the set I pick up this year, the same type I used last year. These have a “Thinsulateâ€
