Denny Brauer is the frickin man when it comes to a jig.

And only one other vote for Gary Klein! At the very least, definitley the best West that went East.

Gary Klein learned from Dee at the age of 16.....Still take Dee for the pick.....Dave Gliebe learned also from Dee, BUT> Dave invented the technique of Pitch'in the Jig in the late 70's early 80's.

I have an old book that shows Dave G. punching and winning a tournament, only back then he called it lever jigging? Fishing through mats and sticking big fish.

But this is a tough question, because different guys became famous or popularized different techniques. It would not mean that they were the best at it, but probably best known for jig fishing.

I've watched them both fish up close and Dave Gliebe has Dee beat by a mile.
I think Dave took an idea that started in Dee's head and made it better.

No question Klein. Not only is he the best when it comes to shallow water flippin but he is an awesome deep water jig fisherman. Don't forget his back to back FLW wins on a jig either. He won two years in a row in Memphis on the river there.

Gary was the first guy to put a turned eye hook in a jig, first to put a needle point round bend hook and the first to put in a rattle...some of you guys might be to young to remember the Weapon Jigs. I poured and painted them in my garage for Gary when I was 16.

So many anglers have built reputations using a jig. I think it's impossible to select THE best. Guys I think of when I think Jigs are some of the obvious; Denny Brauer, Dave Gliebe, Gary Klein, Tommy Martin, Dee Thomas.

I'm sure there are a lot of regional anglers that lay some claim to serious notoriety with a Jig as well. In my backyard a legend with a jig is our own Andy 'Cooch' Cuccia. Heck he's got one out there with his name on it.

Like most anglers, it's not all Dee or Cooch do, so it's safe to say that many of the anglers at the highest levels of competition use a jig in their arsenal as well.

Without a doubt though, the angler I MOST associate with a jig is Denny Brauer.

If you are restricting the best to tournament fisherman, then Denny Bauer has won the most money jig fishing then all the others.
Dee Thomas invented tournament flipping, but jigger pole fishing at the Delta has been around a long time before Dee Thomas introduced it to tournaments.
If you are talking about trophy bass fishing or the top 10 biggest bass ever caught on jigs, there is a long list of western bass fisherman to consider that tournament fisherman may have never herd of. For example my 5 PB jig bass are;
19.3, 17.6 , 17.4, lake Castaic.
18.6, 17.4, lake Casitas.

West=John Murray,, shallow or deep, flipping or casting, very versatile jig fisherman: hula grub, football jig, flip jig,,,and he can take his game east and do well with it

East= Greg Hackney,, made a lot of money with the jig..

Okay Guys,

I have a problem with this conversation. Are we talking jig fishing or Flipping? They are two completely different beasts. Flipping is done with a jig, a worm, a creature bait, a lizard blah blah blah. It is not jig fishing.

Although one can use a jig while flipping, the real jig fishing technique is done by casting it either in deep water or shallow water. Working rock ledges, rock piles or what have you. Maybe I'm just oldschool but that's my take on it.

In that case, I'd have to say Larry Hopper or Klein are probably two of the best the West has ever produced. As for the East, it'd have to be McClellend.

That's my opinion of the subject. ;-)

I bet the flipping guys are looking for Dee's 14' rods to string up with!
There has been a lot good tournament jig fisherman over the years. Larry Hooper is good, but I don't think Larry could beat Gary Klein, unless you are talking about the desert lakes and spider jigs.
Good to see you respond.

Dee, and Denny.......In my humble opinion, Mr. Thomas, and Mr. Brauer
don't get near enough credit for what they've accomplished or given to
this sport over the years. Whether it's flippin sticks, reels, boats, or jigs, these two have done more than influence a few designs in almost every aspect of this sport, and they did so without have to scream
at the top of their lungs or play to a crowd. They just fish cuz they truly love the sport.

Re: I will be fishing the Jig with Denny next week?

Post by george »

Denny and I will be fishing the jig next week on the delta so I will let you know if he is still any good!
What I do know is that he made over two million before anyone could earn a 100k for a tournament win.

I have fished with him before and watched him pitch a jig in water that was two feet deep and clear, no fish in site for at least twenty feet in any direction. He lifts the rod tip, shakes it a bit and a three pounder magically appears and attacks the jig; in the boat!

Craziest thing I have ever witnessed; I think Denny could jig up a fish in a mud puddle....

A side from that I also landed my PB of 10.70 on a jig with Denny cheering me on so I am a little partial!

I'll let you know how it go's!

Jeff, my dad has been out of the loop for several years now but he fished tourneys with Gary Davis way back 20-25 years ago.. I was just a kid back then but I also remember Jack VanGrow as a good Jig fisherman...

Yes he is good and he gets tons of credit!

He learned from Dee Thomas as well. Cooch set out to become a great jig fisherman by studying the craw fish and paying close attention to MR. Dee Thomas.
I do not think that Andy himself feels he ever reached the level of greatness with a Jig as Dee.

Dont get me wrong, Andy is one hell of a jig fisherman.
He became so because of Dee.

maybe some time we should put on a Jig only tournment?
