6lb braid or smaller on spinning reels.

Post by acm95301 »

Have you guys used small diameter braid on spinning reels for trout and finesse applications? How do you feel it rates against mono and fluro?

Currently I use 4lb, 6lb Fluro and 8lb mono for the various finnese and trout apllications.

Since I started using power pro braid 65 lb on my new rod, alot of my prejudices about braid are diminishing and thought that decreaced line diameter might be more important than line visability.

I prefer the braid with trout in lakes, ponds, etc. however stick with mono all the way in the high country streams.

It may be more of a mental thing, but I just cant stick with braid in the streams and always seem to go back to mono.

I use 8lb power pro on my drop-shot set up. That is with a Dobyns DX702 wand a Diawa Sol. I find that it get less twist through out the day.BUT I do use about a 6-8' 6lb flo leader.

Yes.
I know you asked about 6lb or less but 8lb is really thin as well.

10# Power Pro or Spider Wire braid, anywhere between 4# - 12# flourocarbon leader - kick-butt setup! I've been using this setup for over 3 years now, for everything from dropshot, flukes, Senkos, shakey heads, etc... no more line twist, gear up or down on the fly, and best of all I haven't had to change my braid yet!

Roger,,, you use uni-uni knot too?
No problem with bigger fish?

I'll see you at Shasta next month (the reason I took interest in this

thin braid plus fluoro leader is Shasta,,,,I heard I might have to fish

real deep there)

Thanks guys, I've been slow to warm up to braid. But now I think I'll give it a try. I'm going to practice my uni-knots and get started.
The 65lb braid I'm using is alot easier to work with than I remeber from fireline.

I'm considering using braid in my finesse fishing, trout fishing, and deep jiging and spoons.

I've been using a palomar knot and burning the tag end to form a bead. That seems to work well....any other knots I should know..besides the uni-knot.

Try the Albright know for braid to fluoro. Wrap the brain around the fluoro loop, and leave a 1/4" tag on the braid.

Hi Kevin! I do use the uni-to-uni knot for all my splices, and the uni knot for all my attachments. I've gotten a 10.97 and 11.07 this year up here, using the 10# Power Pro connected to a 6# flourocarbon leader, so no problem with the bigger fish.

Looking forward to seeing you up there then - it's been far too long!

The other thing I really like about the braid setup is that it is extremely sensitive in deeper water - I can feel the lightest 'tick' in 40 feet or more... real good stuff!
