Deck Extension - What do you guys think so far?

Post by Lugnut »

Heres a pic of the deck extension I built for my 1985 Ranger 370V. The boat goes in for carpet this week then it will be done. I used marine grade plywood, pressure treated 2x4's, stainless and galvanized screws and brackets, then put two coats of fiberglass resin on top of it. I also primered and sprayed several coats of paint on the under side of the lids and inside the compartments so that when you open them, the color matches the boat. I will post another pic after the carpet is done. [img][/img]

Nice Work Lug !

Anyone that uses Marine Grade plywood from the get-go already is way ahead.

Did you plan on running speaker wires before you carpet your boat ? And is that circle in the drivers console where a speaker was already mounted ?

I wish to run a stereo/sat/i-pod system in my boat .... My carpet is almost due for a replacement and have the kit already. Gona wait till after el~Nino to install it in the spring more than likely as it is starting to come unglued in some sections now.

I have more than enoufgh room to mount some tri's under the driver and passenger console ~ with more than enoufgh leg room. But I won't have a really good idea on how to wire the port side speakers with the wire routed around the gunnel's to get to the passenger foot console until the carpet itself is out -- without running a wire under the carpet itself if I decide to install one earlier.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

DeltaDan - Yes the circle in the drivers console is where a speaker was mounted before. I am having a piece of ABS Plastic cut to cover the hole. Then I will find something cool to mount there. As far as running the speaker wire, I have a cd / stereo mounted in the rear compartment behind the drivers seat with a wired remote on the dash. All I had to do was run the wires up the side along the steering and throttle cables up into the console. I have a couple holes drilled so I can just pull the wires through into the insert, of course I upgraded the speakers to go in the new insert :D ..........

I think it looks great bro, it will really open up your front deck in terms of fishing space and storage space. Good job

One thing I would have suggested is to use caulking wherever you joined any piece of wood....... it will help with noise and to keep moisture out.

I didn't think about the caulking  , but I did resin all the ends of the wood before I assembled them, then I resined everything twice :D .

Sweet looking deck extension, Lug.

BTW, I'm asssuming you are going to put locking units in the two storage lid holes. I was wondering where you got the hardware for those?
Thanks,

Wolfeman - Do to clearance underneath inside the hatches (I have just enough clearance, and I do mean just enough clearance to store Plano 3700's without damaging them :D ). I am just installing flush mounted latch handles like the one in the picture above the insert. I am purchasing a Loc-R-Bar that will protect all my goodies as far as for when I am running....well I will have to see what happens.

Lugnut, Good job, How did you fasten this extension down to the boat hull? I too have talked about doing this but talking doesn't seem to get it done. Ken

Ken - I haven't yet. I am having the insert carpeted serperate from the boat just in case I need to pull it out (camping, kids, etc.). I was going to set it with 4 stainless screws. I figure that would be good enough, the only way I could get it to move was to put all my weight on one of the corners. It is pretty solid otherwise.
