New Tournament Bag Rule for 2009?

Post by Vernonn »

For tournaments, do the DFG regulations require that we bring up separate bags for up to 5 pounds total weight per bag of black bass?

Is this for all lakes in the California?

As far as I know right now that is true. My anglers choice T.O.C. back in October made us do the same thing, for the reason of us getting used to it.
I'm not sure when it comes into place though...

Depends on how far you have to walk... last tournament at Clear Lake, I was about wiped out by the time I hit the scale line!

I think it's a great rule though, and should help further preserve the resource.

If you have five bags then you still will have a great feeling cause it'll be five fish 5 pounds or more each, correct?

I understand where DFG is coming from on this, if you got a couple 2.5 pounders they need to be in a bag together and no more. Makes sense to me.

To date I've rarely had to worry about the ten pounder but it'd be in it's own bag as well. :)

Not really Tony. If you have all 3 ponders they all have to be in separate bags. 5 pounds of fish in 1 bag is maxed.
So if you have 5 fish for 6 pounds you have a 2 bagger. lol

At somewhere like Oroville, you'd need 2 to 3 bags because the normal weights range from 8 to 14 pounds per limit.

Then, if you fished somewhere like Clear Lake and you get a limit of clone 3 pounders, you'd need 5 bags - each with water - you might need two guys per boat to bring up the fish because it's a little heavy. This could slow down the weigh-in because everyone has to tie up and walk up carrying bags of water.........

The tournament orgs might have to provide bags with wheels.

This is a good rule...

Go to most any weigh-in and you'll frequently see bags of of fish with about 3-in of water barely covering the fishs' back. Not good for the fish especially if there is any sort of line.

If it can be done, a drive-by weigh-in is best.

What if I don't carry a scale? What if I only use a balance beam? Sometimes a 2lber looks like a 4lber. Are you guys going to buy 4 more bags? Man alive. Everyone is going to be carrying 3 to 5 bags for every tournament.

Here is the language regarding the issue in question. It is part of the SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR CONTESTS CONDUCTED
UNDER ANNUAL OR EVENT PERMITS provided to all black bass fishing contest applicants issued permits for 2009 tournaments.

5. When weighing in, bass shall be transported to and from the weigh-in site in water-filled containers such as heavy-duty plastic bags. No more than about five pounds of bass shall be placed in a single container.

6. Bass shall be held at all times with sufficient water to cover the fish, except during the actual measuring/weighing process. Fish shall held in plastic bags no longer than three (3) minutes prior to or after the weigh-in unless the water in that bag is replenished. The same number of containers designated in (5) above shall be used to take them to the release point. Tournament organizers shall ensure that all fish are handled expeditiously in a manner that maximizes the survival of all fish.

This rule is to be implemented at all black bass fishing contests beginning January 1, 2009.

I suppose the standard size of tournament bags can be reduced, no need to put a 3 pounder in a full size bag.

In reference to Kmurphy's post. The Three minute rule that will go into effect "Now" or "March".

In a 3 minute time slot, I've timed Tournament Directors in the 3 minuted period. They can do about 3 tournament teams in that period.

Thus, A tournament Director will have to have a controlled amount of fisherman at the Tubs. In my opinion it will require two additional personal to operate this new law, one on the tubs and one on the docks with walkie talkies or some kind of communications.

If the TD doesn't seem to get it or he doesn't go with the program, he may get fined by DFG. Amount of fine, I don't know.

3 min rule has been in effect since at least March of 97 which is when the last set of special conditions for bass tournaments was put out.
3 min from the time the fish is first put in the bag to the time it goes into the release boat or back in the water. BASS did a study in the 80's or early 90's that showed oxygen consumption rates based on the weight of bass in a given amount of water at a given temperature. I believe that is where that 3 min rule came from.
It's up to the TD and the anglers to know the rules. A copy is sent out with every permit issued. TD's should be discussing them with the anglers in their tournaments, and members of their clubs. They haven't changed much in so long I think people just assume that everyone knows them.
If your getting ready to bag your fish and there is already 6-7 people in line, just wait a few min. wipe down the boat, then bag your fish up. Larger tournaments should probably have someone helping direct traffic, or even better provide a limited number of bags and only allow fish to be weighed in those bags.
Drive up weigh-ins do make it much easier in most cases and are required now at Diamond Valley.

If any of the mod's would like a copy of the new for 09 special conditions as well as the new Quagga/Zebra conditions to post up I can provide e-copies.

5 bags, each with a gallon of water in it, will be well over 40 pounds total (1 gal of water = 8.35 pounds).

Consider Russos and walking up the ramp and over the levee to the weigh station with all that water. Weigh in will be a team effort.

Yes... along w largies and a few other less common species.....

tourney guys just kinda got used to referring to largemouths as blacks in waters that also hold smallies and/or spots

Someone needs to tell WON then, in an article in the 2008 Bass Anglers Guide page 88, Hutch tells us in his article to :

"have your fish bagged prior to your vehicle arriving at the scales. Don't wait until you are parked in front of the stage to get out and try to get your 5 fish bagged while holding up everyone else. Do it in advance even if you're a solo angler."

Sounds like the fish would be in the bags longer than 3 minutes.

Although it may not be official by DFG's date, it is indeed a rule tournament orgs are implimenting and have been doing so at the two events Jason mentioned here. Damn, ya think a TopNut would know this stuff! HAR! HAR! HAR!

It's about an asinine a rule as the DFG has ever come up with. Course, I'm sure their reasoning behind it is they simpley can not get all the tournament orgs to provide enough tanks and water flow to support the way it's been done. But hey, It's California, where we let orgs run over the DFG and ban trout plants. We're they can't seem to police our waters ways where a group of anglers are over harvesting and raping all our fisheries. Where our liscenses increase 15-20% every year, and a Striper stamp now becomes a Bay/Delta stamp to squeeze more dollars out of the public.

Go write the new president about this, he's a man of change right? Ah STFU Cooch, go back to yer lil river tub and go fishin.

Kinda like to see you try carrying 5 bags of 5 pounders, with sufficient water, from the dock here, or at Clear Lake for example, to the weigh in - I'd be impressed. Especially if they're the regulation bags, without handles, that the organizations typically have used in the past. Heck, even with the heavy bags with handles I'd still be impressed.
