Marty don't kid yourself.

The Republicans owned congress and the white house for six years and not once did they pass it. Now that the democrats own the white house their trying to pass the buck. There is also another 36 million acres of land that then can drill but Bush won't allow that.

Democrat or Republican they are all nuckleheads!

Strangely enough hippie has a good point. In the late 60s & early 70s gas in europe was going for around $5.00 a liter. Which we all know is less than a gallon. However we have a lot of oil we could be pumping if it weren't for certain special interest groups. I'm not pointing any fingers, but I'm sure we all know who those groups are.

However, even if we started drilling for oil here in the US again you can't really believe it would bring the prices down. Sure they may lower them a few cents for a while, but they would still go right back up. If we want to play, we will just have to pay. It took us decades longer to get to $5.00 a gallon than Europe. We need to lobby for vehicles that will tow our boats that get 30+ MPG. You know they have the technology.

My question would be. How do we get them to allow that kind of gas millage???

It was over 7 Euros for a liter in Greece when I was there 2 years ago. Thats when the exchange rate was 1 Euro = 1.36 Dollars and remember a liter is less than a gallon.

To be exact, there are 3.785411 litres per US gallon of gas, so in your example a US gallon would have cost $36.04 at that time.

I know they were reporting gas in the UK was over $8 per UK gallon several weeks ago, and that my wife's family in Romania is paying well over that rate right now... last she heard they were paying over 8 Euros per litre.

This is not to minimize our pain, as we are nearing $5 per gallon in an uncertain economy, with depressed housing prices, all costs of living rising due to the rising fuel rates, and no government intervention at this time to provide relief. I, for one, am extremely concerned where we are headed. Can't bury the head in the sand for long, as these are troubling economic times for sure.

Roger

EDIT: The values for UK fuel are based on UK units of measure (gallons), not litres. Current rates in the UK are reportedly nearing $6 per UK gallon.

I found an interesting site, from the Energy Information Administration - Department of Energy:
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/gas1.html

The site lists gas price averages weekly since January 1996, for the US, UK, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, France, and Belgium.

For anyone interested, I've condensed the prices to the weekly rates for 2008, and the January rates for each year prior, where it is obvious we have been (and continue to be) fortunate:
  • Weekly Retail Premium Gasoline Prices (Including Taxes)

and CNN reported peurto rico is paying 1.74 a gallon......... why is the US SUBSIDIZING THEIR GAS

Oh and looking at your numbers there is quite a few weird changes in prices. Also note that US gas started getting high in 05. As the build up to drilling offshore and ANWAR was finally closed. The attempt to drill started in 00.

Also note the huge price jumps in 06 and upwards. I guess China and India JUST started buying gas.

But wait, wasnt it the Hurricanes that caused it... or the Iraq war?
or Iran ? or Chavez?

how many more excuses do we have to hear before they just say. " Look LET US DRILL and you will see a drop"

Nope: China has been buying since 00. I think US oil companies want to force the country to let them drill and this is the way to do it

Could very well be... this is a sheep's society, and the masses are easily manipulated due to ignorance and/or gullibility.

"I saw/heard it on the TV/radio, so it must be true!"
