Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair????
Just woundering now that the gas prices have gone though the roof, what would be fair to ask your non-boater or too give to your boater at the pumps as well as for the days launch?? I know that some of you guys are rich and only ask about 20.00 if that, but that 20.00 dollars don't go very far at the pumps these days. and "NO" I'm not asking to pay for half the note on the boat either!!!
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
If your non-boater has any manners and common sense regarding the oil market crisis, they should ask you at the end of the trip, "What do I owe you, including the gas for the tow vehicle?" Educate the non-boater that it isn't just the gas they are paying for. Time on the water, boat oil, insurance, wear and tear on the boat all factor into the cost of a trip now, not to mention yearly maintenance and repairs over time. Listen to your HEART! Don't gouge the guy, just make them aware that we are in living under EXTREME conditions. If they think they are being "gouged", suggest they book a trip with a Professional guide. I'm sure they'd see the light when they compare the Guide's prices vs. what they would have to pay to help for what is "fair". If they have other friends with boats who will take them for free, so be it. None of us are "rich". Most boaters probably have worked longer than a non-boater, made some good choices or were at the right place at the right time to afford a rig. Sure, 3 years ago $20 would have been a bargain. Today, it will pay for lunch!!
Before you take a non-boater out, be up front about today's circumstances. Pretty soon, they will have a better understanding of the fact that there is more than meets the eye to owning a boat.

If you're going anyway. Whatever. But if you need the non-boater to be able to afford the trip, let him know up front. Half the days gas for boat and truck, split expences right down the middle.
But the backseat did not buy the boat. He should NOT be expected to pony up for maint , wear & tear, depreation or any other boat ownership expences.

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
The "best" way to do it is to have the boat and your truck filled up before heading to the lake (If non-boater is driving with you). Then when your done for the day... stop and fuel back up and split the cost. This never seems to work out for me because usually by the end of the day I'm beat and do not want to stop on the way home to get fuel. So, I usally leave it up to the non-boater to offer how much he feels that is fair considering the amount of run time we done on the lake.
If I'm heading to the lake anyways (non-tourney or prefishing excluded) I never expect money from a non-boater. However, if it is offered I do appreciate it especially now due to the cost of fuel.

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
If traveling together thats a fair statement, if the non-boater travels to lake in his own vehicle than your statement is ridiculous. The best way to be fair is fill your boat up before the trip. At the end of the trip both fishermen go to the gas station and fill up the boat. They split whatever the cost of filling the boat is after the end of the day. I guess you would have to estimate the cost for oil.drrakruz wrote:"What do I owe you, including the gas for the tow vehicle?"

I don't think the truck fuel is ridiculous even if you did not ride up together.
A great example would be a club tourney at Clear Lake. I don't really want to go, but to support the club, and the nonboater members I tow up there anyway.
I had my nonboater say to me, "Me and so and so (two nonboats) rode up together to save money so we didn't have to pay you for truck gas..."
In other words, "tow the boat up here so we can fish out of it, and we can give you the finger because we did not ride up together..."
I told him," I didn't care if they rode a moped together, I towed it up here so you guys could fish too. How about if I just towed it half way then what?"
So you see the I was going fishing anyway arguement does not always apply. I was going to support the club and not leave the nonboater on the bank. The nonboater in the story eventually got his own boat, tow machine, and a different perspective.
My solution, I don't go to events far away, that I am not hot for, just to support the club.

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
$60 and I have been a non-boater even though I own a boat. It costs $150 to fill the truck up with diesel and I burn from $30 to $70 in gas in a day on the boat. It is true that the boater decided to own the boat but the non-boater decided not to own one and to say it is a treat for the boaters to have the privelege of having a non-boater along is just not right. I never charge anyone to backseat in my boat and I won't fish a draw tourney anymore just so I can control who I fish with. Oh boy you drove yourself to the lake. I am convinced that the majority of non-boaters are great people and very helpful but I have also seen plenty who just want to take advantage of someone else paying the full load. I call them freeloaders.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
Most of us anglers now have boats with Mercury smart craft guages or other manufacturer guages that can disply the amount of gallons of gas uses for the day. What I usually do is hit a couple buttons on my guages and let the co-angler know how many gallons of gas we burnt. The rest is up to him or her. Most of the time they provide me with a litle more than I would expect, and I usually give some back. However, today we are all feeling the impact of gas increases so, it could be a little different. It is always better for the co-angler to offer before I have to let them know. This way I can show them the gallons used for the day and they can do the math. 13 gallons X $4.50 =$78.00 for the day. $40.00 is cool for me. Hopefulluy I only burn 13 gallons, but with the tides of the WON BASS coming up, it looks like my gallon usage will be twice that!!

We are all feeling the higher cost, one way or the other. It would only be fair, for the non-boater, to split the cost of fuel with the boater. This would include his vehicle fuel also, as he has brought the boat and vehicle you are fishing on for the purpose of fishing.
It will cost the non-boaters more, but fair is fair. At least that is my feeling. Bill K

Fun fishing the country, each and every week.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
Didnt you guys go through this argument a while back? Just fish Team events if you are worried about all the freeloaders. Half the boat gas is one thing, but not gas for the tow vehicle. Unless they rode shotgun to the water with you. When I go out I figure I was going anyway and only charge if the nonboater wont take no charge for an answer.

Though this topic has been BEAT to death and if you really want to know what people think you should back read there are some VERY long threads on this.BUT here is a new twist on what a co-angler should pay for fuel and what ever(this is if we are talking about tournaments).Do you pro's(or guys that just have the money to call yourselfs pro)expect the same amount of money from us co's if you are going to run around all day and "bed fish"?I mean give me a break,we will run to this spot for 5 mins while you catch your bed fish then run to the next spot and catch another one and so on and so on.Some times we don't even have time to get set up for the new spot because you have made 2 cast and have hooked-up already. And don't say I should be more pre-pared or ready faster because there are not to many people faster than myself when it comes to being ready.I just don't think it is very fair to say we should share 1/2 the cost if you are "bed fishing"more than 1/2 the day.And as most of you know there are mant times when you are on a bed fish that there is really no where for your co to even fish very well. When this happens to me I still countinue to fish even though I know I will not have a very good chance to catch anything.Kinda a tough when your boater is on a "bed-fish" in a tiny(10-10ft area) cove and all you have is 60-80 ft of water with ragged rocks around you.Not very fun,and I don't think you should exspect as much gas money if this is going to happen all day.Just mt thoughts.
As for what drrakruz had to say,I think some of that stuff is CRAZY.Fair is fair but I don't think most of these gentlemen at least on the FLW NG series are counting on us no-boaters to make it possible for them to fish this series.I have been very blessed with the PRO's I have been paired with and they have ALWAYS been more than fair to me.Thanks guys.God Bless...Jim

This topic has been beat. BUT with the price of gas going up and I guess thats why its comin up. If I make a trip to CL from Sac I ask my non boater for 50.00. Thats if they are ridin with me. If its a trip to Folsom maybe 20.00 if its Amador just the 32.00 to gwet in is cool. The most Ill ask is 50.00 for one day. Its not half but I think its fair.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
I agree with you leachman more than you might expect and that is the very reason I will never fish as a non-boater again and I also will not fish a draw tournament. I am going to control my destiny and I will fish with whoever I want. I don't ask for any money because I don't want someone telling me what I should be doing in my boat. They are my guest. I still think if you choose to fish pro-am tournaments you should be willing to pay $60 a day for the boat ride or stay at home. JMO.

my observation...........
just a simple observation that hopefully might hit home.
Over 5 years as a boater and NB's have always offered $20-40 dollars as a days expense for fishing. it has never changed and still goes on today! My expenses just to fish (not driving, launch, food, etc) just fishing, have surely increased in the last 5 years; especially this year.
If you've been paying a guy $20 bucks over the last 2-3 years, you need to be paying $40 now, as a minimum. that shouldnt even need to be said.
If you were paying $30, offer $60 bucks now and see if you get 5-10 back.
I never argue with NB's if they offer a minimal amount, i just take it, thank them for a good day on the water, and move on.
I surely do appreciate more the guys who take responsibility and offer a full share. i constantly give back money if its too much and will always ask these guys to come back out with me again.
Think about it ........

Re: my observation...........
In team tournaments this is what my partner and I do. We both have new Rangers with 225s on the back of them. If we use my boat at a tournament, where ever it is, my partner springs for the total tournament fees, options, lunch and drinks. If we use his boat I spring for the same. This usually works out well with a day of pre fishing before it works out to be about 50.00 a day. If there is no pre fishing, oh well that's what is fair for us and we go home happy. I know this doesn't always work for teams who don't each own their own boat but this is a good way to help the boater if he is using his boat every tournament. If a non boater fishing a pro am I think 50.00 minimum should be given to the boater. If you think about it how far does 50.00 go these days. Bairly a half tank for the truck

I have been out with numerous NB's and feel that having them make the next months boat payment is fair trade for your services. We have to understand that us as boaters are continusly sharing information with our non-boaters and it pretty much a guide trip with out the license. These non-boaters hsould feel privlaged to be amongst the elite fisherman that have struggled and made their way to owning a boat. These non-boaters are the future and letting them know exactly what it is like to pay for these fine pieces of machinery is part of the learning experiance, you may all be think "the next month's boat payment", but in reality it works out just fine, you figure i probably burn through $60 worth of Gas driving to any location, fill up the boat, have to put the non boater on fish, etc it all amounts to a boat payment easy. with todays gas prices I would even think that telling the non boater boat payment plus 40 for gas would be appropriate. Well thats how i do it and have had great success.W.C wrote:Just woundering now that the gas prices have gone though the roof, what would be fair to ask your non-boater or too give to your boater at the pumps as well as for the days launch?? Only problem with that theory is that quite a few pros in a pro-am suck at fishing. Might be worth the money to read the bowling shirt.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
Whew! Way too must hassle tryin' to figure out fair costs in real time. So I decided to nip this thing in the bud once and for all.
So I added this baby to my boat's console (runs on 12 volts!):
And then put this lighted sign on the bow:
so when we're all packed and ready to roll, I push a few buttons and let the meter do its magic.
You can use the "Extras" part of the meter if a NB'er brings bananas or too much tackle on board.

Our club in SF died because of this same attitude from some of the non boaters. So, a few of the boaters stopped participating in the club events and the club just became defunct.
For you non-boaters out there, a beginning contribution to the boater should be $35 minimum, and now (with gas prices the way it is) should be $60. I say this because most boaters do not burn 30 gals. ($120) in gas for their boat and probably burn 24 ($56) gals. for their truck.
For me personnaly, I will only take money for the boat approximately $30 (and not always), depends if we run or not. I no longer run and will fish close to the launch facility - using my troller motor for 4 hours or so.
Not always, because I extend the invitation to my non-boater.

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
LOL!! Now that right there is funny stuff. Thing is, most non-boaters do own boats, probably have their whole life, and know exactly what it costs to run a boat. Ive had the pleasure of sharing a boat with many excellent fisherman who not only knew had to fish but were just flat out enjoyable to fish with. The flip side is that Ive also fished with many boaters who couldnt find a bass if it was in their panties. But, and heres the great part, they thought they were great fisherman because they had a nice boat and all the nice gear. See what Im saying? Promises of being on fish (even though the non-boater pre-fished and found fish), completely ignoring any input of the non-boater, boasting of all the club tournys won, backseating strategies, nasty looks when the boater doesnt like your cast, etc. etc. This is the attitude of many a clueless boater and self proclaimed pro. Thats right, you too can boast of being a pro if you have enough money for the entry fee, hell you dont even have to know the first thing about finding and catching bass. Give me a break. Guide trip? Hah! More like an 8 hour torture.bassinholic wrote:W.C wrote:..... Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
Of course it all depends on variables like how much runnin around on the water you do and did the boater and non boater drive to the ramp together and how far did you drive in the first place.....
for me, living fairly close to the Delta and running a 150 Opti which is pretty effiecient (when it works ).....
I'd say $30-40 would be a decent place to start for fun fishing w/out much WOT time and low/moderate runnin... my buddy gave me $50 last week but we covered some serious water. The way I see it is I'm goin fun fishin anyhow so anything extra is cool w me.
Team tourney's or pre-fishing for the same.... 50/50 is fair including truck gas, oil and launch........ figure it out w your partner
for Pro AMs and today's prices... $40 should be the min.... $60 or more might be more appropriate but of course it will always vary
This Q comes up frequently..... and while the actual $ amount will change based on current fuel prices (certainly has since the last time this topic came up )...... the bottom line is whatever is fair for the day.... typically 50/50 in boat fuel and launch...... when in doubt it's probably better to give the boater a little extra cuz there's always hidden expenses w boat ownership that add up.......... I fish as a boater in team tourney's and a non boater in Pro-Am's so I see both sides and just try to be fare..... during a recent team event we figured about $100 for half,,,, that was on the high side but we ran a lot.......it never hurts to ask or talk about it w your days partner..

During the FLW my day one am asked me what he owed me for gas. Since we burned a tank and a half and he too had a good day, I said 40 bucks, he said, "How about thirty?" I said, yeah whatever!! All other 3 days me ams gave $40.
$40-$50 should be good.

I think if your in a tourney or a pro/am you should only pay if you win. If you don't your pro should pay you your entry back. Not really just kidding. I really think you should give a little more than half and if you win hook the pro up even more. I mean really if you win 12 to 15000 for a pro/am whats 500 or 1000 this could even be a low amount for having a good time. Just think about it, could make someones day.

The backseater should pay for the boaters wifes weekend in a resort while thy're out fishing , buy lunch and have the boat detailed , also for a chase boat to bring cold beer out while they're fishing.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
I bought the beer in my last tournament so now I am pi$$ed! Cheap non boater.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
Heres a good way to look at the tournament thing. Exspenses should be proportional to the amount of money that each angler is fishing for! Makes sense to me.

I fish as a boater in team tourney's and a non boater in Pro-Am's so I see both sides and just try to be fare..... during a recent team event we figured about $100 for half,,,, that was on the high side but we ran a lot.......it never hurts to ask or talk about it w your days partner..
If a guy asks me to go fishing cause he's already going I ask how much running he's doin' and what his intentions are. If he's out to prefish for a tournament and wants to run till he's bone dry and have an extra line in the water should I be paying for all that gas? hmmm....I don't think so. If he needs someone to help out with gas cause he wants to fun fish no problem how much running are you doing?. As for tournaments I've only fished team events and that's a no brainer.
if you want to be exact have the tank filled before/after
communication is key without it there will always be another "half day expense?" thread

Bassenvy,
I think the NB need to pay for the extra viewing that is seen on the day of fishing – you own me $10. It is cheaper then a table dance!

Well Bill of course, for it was probabely something that non boater did that caused the malfunction in the first place..wether it was karma or what have you. These NB's obviously have more cash then we do lieing around for their entrance fee is less and well lets just face it B.O.A.T.= Bust Out Another Thousand, We are doing these Non Boaters a complete injustice by not letting them thrive in the glory of what it is like to own a boat.Bill kizer wrote:bassinholic wrote:I uderstand your point, but if the pro's boat is paid off then what? Should the NONBOASTER make both payments as well as the repair bill?

Now I am digging on the idea of adding that taxi meter, for not only would that look slick, but you would be able to show that NB what it actually cost...start the meter at $40 first 1/8 of a mile and 2.50 increments after that.
Now I am shocked to hear that a boater had to buy beer on a recent trip..tisk, tisk, this NB should be made public for WE AS boaters need to know if we are going to get stiffed right off the bat or the NB is going to go with the program..
Oh and for all the NB's that feel that this thread is against NB's, All I have to say is "Enjoy the VIEW from the bank"!!

I say $30.00 for fuel and $10.00 for the launch is fair for most trips.

Just remember bassoholic, without NBs there are NO tournaments for you to fish, seems that fishermen can't be trusted i guess.

I am glad all of our AZ tourneys are basically team events. Only 2 of our clubs are draw as well. The last thing I want is to be forced to take someone in my boat who has the attitude that he forced his self on the boat. I would rather never fish a tournament again.

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
I have had thoughts of fishing draw tournaments but it sounds like there are just way too many boaters that think we owe them the world for letting us nb fish out of there BACK of there boats. now don't get me wrong there are a lot of guy that sound realy cool about it. But I don't want to run into the guy wants a boat payment ($200) and $40 bucks for gas too let them front end me..
So i have decided not to fish them

Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
BS-don't give it up yet. There are all kinds of boaters that are very happy to have a backseater to fish with. I rarely fish alone and always offer rather than have someone miss a tournament for lack of a ride. I never take anything. I do not feel the backseater owes me anything but do expect them to offer. I am referring to the occasional a-hole that thinks he is entitled to jump in someones boat and expects them to take him. There are a few of those out there but luckily not many. Tight lines.

basssmacker,Trust me when I tell you I have made some of the best guys when fishing these bigger tournaments. You rarely run into a guy that is going to give you a hard time about stuff. It does happen but not that much.Since I started fishing the BASS Opens and the FLW NG series I have only had 3 guys that I would not want to fish with again. As for my other PRO's I still keep in touch with a # of them and at each tournament they always treat me cool.

Yeah, there's a lot of crud out there for nonboaters. I always pay for half the boat's gas if I'm not driving with the boater, and half for the tow vehicle gas if I am, along with money for the boat. Try and split parking or lake fees also if I can. Its a privlege to fish out of anyone's boat, and I treat them just as I would expect to be treated when I take people out in my own rig. Its BS just to give $20 and be an a$$ about it.
Re: Half the days expenses?? @ todays gas prices, whats fair
All alot of you people are allways crying about gas money for your boat. Seems that you can't afford it anymore and it's time to sell your boat and stop crying about the nonboaters.
In most touraments the nonboater has no say to where he is going to fish as this is the boaters choice and you're the one that made the choice to run 50 MILES up the river or 15 Miles across the lake.
You should be happy that he/she gave you something as it coat him $$$ also to enter that Tourament plus the drive thier as well.
The nonboater owes you nothing it's a plus if you get anything.
If your fishing a tourament check your rules thier nothing that states that he owes you $$.
BTW I'm a boater and expect nothing from the nonboater but it's nice to have some one offer.
Get OVER it

Outcast-12 foot aluminum kicker boats don't count. I agree that they don't owe anyone a cent. I do think they should offer.

Well apparently you cant read a subtle joke/ scarcasum when it is out there, To be quite honest with ya I would never expect a NB to pay a boat payment, my responses in this thread are in fact to be taken lightly for really no one has their head that far in the you know where to expect a NB to pay $200 for a day of fishing. Pretty much I was making light of a topic that I have seen on the boards numerous times.
Personally I dont expect much from my non boater's that I have taken. I recently took a couple of buddies out and was given 25 dollars for the day, I probabely burned more then that, but truth is Im out there fishing too and dont really care, its part of owning a boat. Besides what I dont burn I still have.....if I hadn't syphoned it out of the boat to put into the truck.
If NB's are going to fish tournies I would say $40 would be a fair amount to pay a boater and half the launch fee. You figure $40 will pay for close to 10 gallons of gas (pretty soon only 8 gallons) and that should cover around 30 to 24 miles with most boats. Now if the boater wants to run around, to different areas, to me that is his decision and the NB's should only have to worry about not getting backseated and catching fish. Trust me when I say about running around, I have done it and have burned more then $40 dollars in gas doing it, but Im not gonna expect a NB to pay for my day.
Bottom line $40.00 should be good and fair maybe $50 if gas continues on its current trend, but no more then that. I would also recommend that things dont get taken too serious and learn to read between the lines on some things. Now If i find a non boater willing to pay my boatpayment and gas...Well I just found my newest bestest fishing buddy. Tight line everyone and be safe out there.
