Jumpers?

Post by L Dub »

How do you catch a fish that you just saw jumping out of the water?

Are they on the move? Or sitting in ambush? I'm not talking about fish that we following a bait or anything.

Do you guys try to catch these fish or is it too much trouble? What would you do to catch it?

What are people's thought on going after a fish you just saw jump?

Leave the Carp alone and consentrate on the Bass.....

Seriously -- 70% of jumping fish that I thought were bass were most always carp.
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I try to call them up again on the surface first. Most likely they are suspending. I will even use a bait to fall through them and watch for a hit on the way down. These can be very hard to catch. But it is cool to get one on the surface in 100' of water. :D

Good luck !

I saw this show on the outdoor channel that was fillmed back east where they were trying to shoot these carp like fish (bow fishing) that would jump out of the water . It was really funny to watch , some of the fish were hitting the people in the boat , Im not sure what it would do to a person if you hit one going fast it might cause some serious damage .

Trust me on this one! Always throw a cast to a jumpin fish even if you think it might have been a carp. Last year in the havasu event for NBW, every time I saw carp cruising the shallows there was always at least one bass with them. I've also seen this alot on lake Mead! I don't know why this happens but I've seen it alot and have caught alot of fish on boils most people would just think are carp!
As far as what to throw on them, what ever is in your hand! :o

BassinDon caught a delta pig a few weeks back casting into busting carp!! Sometimes bass will follow and I think all the jumping/splashing gets them excitied!

ry throing a senko in at them. And if you have one on throw a topwater bait at them...preferrably one that floats so you can fish it slow. If you throw the senko try to get it as colse to where you saw the fish jump and if you have a topwater throw it past where you saw them jump and bring it through the middle. You also might want to try a ripbait as well again throing it past the boil and bringing it through the middle. I hope this helps!

I was thinking senko, I'll have to be more agressive with trying that. I'm usually hesitant to throw a senko in open water on the delta; I know the current is going to push my bait way out of place. :x

As far as carp and bass hanging together, I figure that at this time of year they're so close cause the carp are feeding on the bass eggs?

Brian - Great show called Gettin Close! I just watched it TiVo'ed last night. I'd love to go out and try that, looked like a blast (other than getting smacked by flying fish)

Gator,

You ever decide you want to go bow shoot some carp let me know. I'll take you to CL and we'll go put the smack down on 'em. Now's a great time to do it too.

A spoon works very well and you can adjust the ROF. I have had luck with a Sammy as well as a rip bait. fan cast past the area.

What basser in their right mind has the willpower not to cast at a big bass jumping....... we all love that stuff... gets my blood pumping just at the thought,,,, whether there's any chance of sticking it or not.... just hafta do it :D

Like Dan said,, most of the jumpers we see on the Delta r just carp,, but not all 8) and I've caught plenty that way

I learned to bass fish on small ponds as a teenager and every year starting in about July, the dragonflies were out in force mating..... everytime they got withen 2 feet of the surface a bass would jump out and try to get em....... it was a lot of fun..... I'd just wait for the jump in my float tube and toss a wacky Mann's Jelly worm at em.... caught bunches of bass that way

That's the beauty of a float tube. I've got jumpers around me all the time and no bites to show for it. :? I've had some BIG fish jump around me while I was in my tube. Last week at Russo's a 7# jumped almost 2 ft out of the water within 10 ft of me. Also happened at Holland once. I was fishing around the berms and then the tules started shaking like crazy. Next thing I know a HUGE LM jumped within 5 ft of me. I tried throwing a money maker and an x-rap at it with no luck.

I always have a senko tied on, I don't know why I never tried throwing that at them. :x
