He has a Yama 150 ProV on a 1988 Ranger 373V -- Bolted directly to his Transom.
Would a 6" plate help him out in any way for Hole Shot, Top End, Gas Milage or Water Cooling ? .... Or is it better for him to leave his rig currently set up as it is now ??
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

will give better top end. holeshot could be worse but i dought it on a 150 just remember with a jack plate the motor sits higher gas is worse cause you will be going 3-7miles faster
Dan,
I have/Had a jack plate on my Ranger. It is I belive a 373-V possiblya 375-V with a 150hp Merc. Im not sure of what the "inches" are for it but as far a hole shot it got on plane pretty fast and I was able to get it up to 55-56 mph WOT. As far as gas mileage and water cooling I couldnt tell you if it helped in anyway. I hope this helps!

P.S. Have you asked Frank or Pete down at Inland Marine about it?

I just bought a used 150 Johnson for my 1987 18.5 Skeeter but it has a 25 in shaft instead of 20 in. I had to install a 5" jack plate and WOW what a difference. I had a 175 Evinrude bolted direct to the transom before and it took a while to get up on plane. Now, I hit the throttle and she pops up so fast it scared me the first time I ran it. I also gained 2 mph from 54 to 56 mph at 5500 rpm.
I put one on my boat and it made a big difference. It was a 6" jack plate on a merc 175 opti on a 185vs ranger. Better hole shot, way better bow lift, and a little more top speed.
A 6" plate on almost any Ranger will improve performance. Being able to fine tune the motor height will generally improve holeshot, handling add speed and RPM's and since the boat is running better overall due to getting up and out of the water vs plowing through, will improve fuel milage as well. Less drag = better economy. On my 492VS, the plate I added gave me an additional 3mph, chine used to start at 65mph, now it doesn't kick in till about 73mph. I also am able to run different props by simply adjusting the plate. I currently run a 26P Bravo 1 that has 8 PVS holes drilled in it, and has been Balanced/Blueprinted by Mark Croxton in Indiana... I've run it to 74.1 with this prop, 75.3 with a Tempest 25P, but less stable.
I would call Phils Props one of the sponsors of this web site, they are pro's when it comes to this question and they will answer it for free, they are very friendly and happy to help.
Check out the bass boat central website. http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeromain
They have a lot of guys on there that have added jack plates to there set ups and often have the same model as what you want to know about. They have specific boat brand forums that would be very helpful.
They helped me with a bunch of info and possibilities for my set up.
