Do you think bass like swimbaits in the Delta??????????

Post by 185vsfrog »

I was out this past weekend fishing a club tourney on the Delta. I heard some splashing in the tullies so I went in to investigate. What I saw next was pretty amazing. One bass attempted to eat another bass almost its same size but couldnt fit it all the way into its mouth. The fish was floating upside down (still alive) with the other fish stuck in its mouth. I netted the entangled fish and performed a rescue. It was physically tough for me trying to separate these two fish. I could not pry the larger fishes mouth open anymore than it was already stretched. It had forced the other fish completely in as far as it would go. I eventually separated the fish. The "eater" was still alive and quickly released. The "eatee" was dead. The "eatee" was at least 2 lbs. So if anybody wonders if swimbaits are working on the Delta, have no fear. I personally dont own any 13" + swimbaits but after seeing this, I will not have any problem chucking any size bait out there with confidence!

For the Pic and its content. I've seen the results of two jealous females twice here at Russo's.

A Four eating a 2 and about the same size in the 3 catagory.

Are these fish being eaten when they are alive? One would at least think the "eatee" would have to be a dying bass, I just can't imagine a health fish not having the streangth to wiggle out of the mouth, but I'm no expert. Amazing pictures.

Cool pics. I've never seen anything like that, but heard about it.

I read an article a few years back about the Texas lunker program. It went something like the huge female they had in a tank they were trying to mate with a male around 4(don't hold me to that, my memory ain't what it was). Anyway they come back the next morning to check on their progress, and the male is no where to be found  !

Watch out guys, all those jokes you heard may have some truth to them, buckle up  .
I had to come back...I know...

Man o Man,
I saw the same thing "sorta" at Shasta one year where a 2lb spot had tried to eat a trout head on and got it stuck 1/2 way back to the dorsal fin and neither could get lose. They were both floating on the surface, flapping and struggling.

i didnt know what the heck it was just splashing away on the surface, so i went over to it and was amazed. I tried to get them apart, but couldnt.

The eagles were circling and surely thinking - YUM, surf & surf!

They are definitely both alive and well at the time of their demise.
As i stated in the other post, i saw a spot choking on a trout at Shasta and both were quite alive.

Bro- They were THICK up in the tulies surface splashing on Sunday .... Working out into open water at cruiser speed seeing 6 monstors heading under your boat at one time was a TRIP !! (Especially the condition I was in. :? )

There were PLENTY of Momma's with 1-4 follower Carps that were 6-8" up to 14" ... before they were alone on themselves. The CRUISERS in a school .... Kool to see !! -- But I wish the Sea Lions in Franks would target them instead of the LM's that hae no more grass in Franks to hide in !!

Keep them Maui Jim's on 8) and it is AMAZING what you can see and differentiate from hallucinigations.

--- But there WERE tons on topwater in the tulies on the East Wall ~~ and South Wall before the Cement. If anyone of you likes to bowshoot them -- Go float a boat and wackem and stackem !! :D

While fishing the WON bass Pro am this last Sunday, I witnessed this for the first time. I saw a silver flash and was going to cast into it and then realized it was a 2.5 lbs bass choking on 2 lb catfish. Went to net it to separate'em and then the catfish got loose. It was definitely a sight to see. Too bad they didn't want none of the swimbaits I had to offer that weekend though.

Trully awesome!!!
Steve Quinn is a fish biologist for In Fisherman and he said once he was fishing in Florida with live shinners and heard some loud splashing and went to investigate and there was a 12 lber with a 7 lb stuck in its mouth but there were no pictures to back up what he wrote though I did believe it, there is no question about it now.
Last year I was out with my kids at a local pond and there was a small say 2 lb bass sitting on a nest, a duck came up to us thinking we had some food and the bass turned and faced the duck and it made 2 fake sprints at the duck and the duck would not move, the next thing I saw was the bass sprinting at the duck coming out of the water and hit the duck dead in the chest making a huge splash and yes that duck took off like a bat out of H%@!.
In 2006 my 4 year doughter caught a 10 lb bass on a barbie fishing pole, she cought a bluegil and the bass ate it.

I was working at a pumpstation at the end of a canal. Floating towards me was funniest looking sun bleached bass, I had ever seen. I wanted to get a better look, so I fished it out with a 10 foot trash rack fork.

It wasn't a Bass at all, it was a HUGE Carlos Delgado sized two pound CRAPPIE!

It choked to death, eating a too big bluegill!

When i was a kid i was fishing this farm pond with a hula popper and i caught this nice bass about 4lbs , when i went to remove the hook from it i noticed some bird feet back inside it throat so i pulled the bird out of the fishes stomach and it was a redwinged blackbird , it was dead . I let the bass go .
Another time at New Melones my friends dad caught a bass when he was cleaning it he found an 18" rattle snake inside its stomach , i think it had like 2-3 rattles on it . He tossed the fish and was afraid to eat it .
I think anything that moves is fair game for Mr. Bass , i have a couple of funny pics of bass that thought they could eat lures larger than them , i will try to post them . :)

This is very common in some of the lakes in Mexico that have high population of Tilapia. I watched a Roland martin show that was filmed in Mexico and Rowland filmed a bass (10lb +) they found flouting on the surface with about 1-2 pound Tilapia stuck in its mouth. He then said that was about the fourth fish he had seen like that on two days.

Happens pretty often....this was a couple months ago at lake casitas. Both were alive and after separating the two and a little TLC in the live well both swam on to live and eat another day!!!
