WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
Just wondering if anyone that was out there can speak to the conditions of the day and the general bite.
Re: WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
I don't know if I'm the one you want to hear from, but here you go....I tried to stay away from the site fishing and go for the staging fish....I ran my favorite March milkrun (temple area) and only managed a small limit on day one......still tried to stick to my plan on Sunday, but with 30-40 mph winds, I didin't attempt the Virgin Basin....just getting in and out of Calville was a chore....coming back was brutal to say the least...I sucked on Sunday, but I knew big weights were going to come in....I'm sure there was a good blade bite on Sunday...I caught a couple on blades, but never got the right stuff....jigs worked well, and so did a tube......that was my deal, but if you look at my results, you will learn what not to do.....hats off to the guys that ran down to the wash area on Sunday.....that must have been a ride and a half!!! I'm sure that is where it was won

Re: WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
I fished all over on day one. I started near Echo and ended near Vegas Wash.
I caught a lot fish, mostly small smallmounths, on everything that I through. I had a 4-5 pounder come off near the boat on day one.
Day two I stayed in the main basin and cranked and through jigs. I caught a 4 pounder on a jig and had another one the same size come off at the boat.
Fishing was the best that I have seen at Mead. I have never seen soo many 10-12 poung limits.

Well I went to the wash, it was very rough on the way there, I just sucked, I couldnt fish any of my open water spots because of the HUGE waves, So i went to my area in the wash, and there were people already there, so basically I went fishing, looking like crazy, my co and I decided to head back around noon due to the increasing speeds of the wind, and we stayed pretty close to the shore line, as close as we could and man oh man, we took 5 waves that were bigger than my consoles, these babies were BIG rollers, I havent seen them since I was beached at lake ST. Clair due to a nasty thunderstorm, and there wasnt much that I could do. My co-angler Chris, well he knew what we were in for since he fihes alot out of his own boat. I had my rain gear on, but he didnt bring his, but he never once complained about anything, besides the dinks we were catching, that boy was soaked and never once complained. Good job to everyone who fished and congrats to the gents with the big bags.
Re: WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
I got to fish with two great gentlemen; Mike Bird - day one, and Greg Garman - day two.
Mike and I had great weather, and excellent fishing. We both busted fish on hooksets that went into the woulda-shoulda-coulda file. We had a respectible 10# limit. Unfortunately for us, so did about forty other pro's and co's.
Greg and I had to go to standby water due to the waves. We caught a small limit, and although he culled twice, it was not enough. I was way off my game, and failed to contribute to our final five. Then, with five minutes to go, I had a fish on that I knew was bigger than our smallest (on a darter), and it over powered my six pound line. Game over.
We went in and took our lumps. You can see where Greg ended up. As a co-angler on Mead, and having a two day total of 19 and change, was a good feeling until I found out that I was way down at 22nd. Wow! Great fishing to be had. My favorite Mead trip since the 2006 Open.
The weather on the second day was typical Mead, but the overall fish catching rate, and the pounds brought in - purely amazing. I mean Todd Harris caught an 8 pounder, and backed it up by a 4+. Wow! Great job!
Congrats to Dick Watson for making the best of his day on Sunday.
Peace,
James

Yeah, saw you break that one off and felt bad for you, as it looked like a pretty good fish.
I myself am shell-shocked... couldn't believe where I ended up (49th) based upon my draws! I had Rusty Brown on day one, and I'd met him two years ago at the US Open and know he's a great stick, so I was pumped to get a chance to fish with him.
Second day I had Gary Boyd, who is always up in the standings, so I figured I had a great draw... wouldn't have traded places with anyone (even though there were a bunch of Pro's I would have loved to get matched up with... seemed like most of the big sticks were out for this one!).
Didn't work out as I'd have envisioned, but had a great time with Rusty and Gary and I'd like to thank them for giving it their all. Mead is Mead... sure had some good sacks and fish weighed in!
Congratulations to Todd Harris and Tami Jennings for their wins, as well as the rest of the pack who did well.
See you all at Clear Lake or Havasu!

Re: WON Lake Mead: conditions extc??
Roger,
Thanks for the congrats! This win is very exciting!
Even though if I hadn't have caught the 3 fish that contributed for the 2 days combined - I wouldn't have won....but the the "win" surely wouldn't have happened without my PROS that did their homework, knew were to find fish and knew what the "big ones" were biting on!
Ricky Shabazz and Todd Harris...thank you both. You guys are great anglers! It was truly a pleasure fishing with you.
