WD-40 and Hooks, is this OK?

I have some rust in my hook box and I NEED to nip this is the bud. My questions is, can I spray a light coating of WD-40 in there?

I know it's a rust inhibitor but what about the scent, will fish shy away from a petrolium based spray? Are there other options?

NO, very bad idea WD-40 has water in it. Get the plano hook holder from wal mart thar prevents rust.

I place Silica pads that come in your medicine or dry goods storage in my boxes....no more moisture contamination.

WD-40 is actually a very good fish attractant, but as I understand, is illegal to use under DFG regulations.

Plano makes inhibitor strips what they supply with some of their boxes. Don't know if you can buy them separately.

I've seen others using Q-tips cut in half and placed in each compartment. I don't know if they work any better or worse than the silica packs or Plano products.

I never heard that WD-40 had water in it..The WD stands for Water Displacement..The 40 is the 40th formulation..It may indeed have some water in the formula, the greatest part is some sort of oil based product..

Dee Thomas used to recommend a light mist of WD-40 over your hooks during the winter months to prevent rust........ I've never had a problem with it. Dee also recommended keeping your lead separate from hooks as lead attracts moisture. I'm too lazy for two boxes but I do keep my lead sealed in small ziplock bags.

In my hard bait boxes, I toss in a couple of those moisture packs that come in just about anything in a box these days..... someone wrote a while back that rice works good for absorbing moisture too....

I read or heard the samething.

I got some water in my hook box years ago, sprayed them down with WD and haven't had any rust problems.

You could always take a few out and do an experiment.

I think w-d 40 containing fish oil is a rumor. I believe it is a petroleum product.
I spray my hooks and lead with Bang to protect them from oxidation and rust. Makes yer box smell good!

WD 40 is a petroleum distillate, there isn't any whale oil in it!

For rusting problems, a light mist of Corrosion X is the ticket. You can use it all over your boat, and it even restores continuity to electric circuts. Won't hurt fishing line either.

WD 40 is fine for five minute jobs, like zipping off lug nuts.

If its something I care about, it gets Corrosion X.

The reason for the fish attractant is the Anise oil in it. The website will tell you what is not in it, but wont say the actual ingredients.
