What is that thing on the back of the boats?
I noticed this long slender device on the back of some of the Boats at the Classic; what is it and what purpose does it serve? Cost?

It is a power pole. It deploys downward to anchor the boat in shallow waters. More of a southeast thing as they have a ton of shallow flats that guys sight fish.

Does it drag the on the back of the Boat or slow it down while the Trolling Motor is working? How much do they cost and are they really necessary out here in California?

The only place that I see the Power Pole working is the Delta or maybe Havasu. It only goes down either 6 or 8 feet. It deploys from the up position.
I have only seen two boats with it. It is a neat invention.

The normal up position is above the bottom of the transom. Andre Moore and Kim Bain have them on their FLW boats. About the only ones I have seen out here. If I had Andres money I would burn mine. Just dont think it has much use out here. Most waters are too deep to be effective. How often do you see yourself fishing in one shallow spot? More of a device for holding position on a windy flat while casting to your target area.

On the website they run between $1300-1500.

they are absolutley awesome!!! If you fish any shallow water at all, they are indeed a must!!! Once you have a power pole you will not have a bot without one, kinda like them mercury pro xs motors and the humminbird side imaging units!!

Seems to me they would have + and -. They can hold your boat immobile while sight fishing, but would also hamper you from getting into low clearance places, under docks and branches, to get into places where spawners hide. The poor man's alternative is a couple of 10-15 pound anchors. They would be even better if they folded forward along the gunwale when not in use.

The guide I went out with for redfish in Florida 3 years ago had one and it was a very slick unit. As others have said, its usefulness on most of our waters would be limited. The coangler would like it when the boater is site fishing a bed and wouldn't have to hold onto a tree or dock for an hour.
Flats fishing they are a real asset.

The ones I saw on the Classic coverage were higher than that. The one on Alton Jones' boat stuck up at least 12 inches above the outboard, maybe more. Maybe they were mounted differently or a longer model than the one in your picture? It is a neat idea.

They have different models, they all mount about the same, the model on the back of altons boat is the larger of the two. did you see Russ Lanes new Legend? He has two of these, one on each side of the motor! If you fish shallow water with current, wind or sight fish these things are a must!Pat wrote:The ones I saw on the Classic coverage were higher than that.
