Dirty water spinnerbaits

Post by Joe »

What do you spinnerbait experts use in cold muddy/stained water to get bites on the blade? What type of blade, colors, etc? Why the blade versus other baits? Thank you,

Try throwing a "Mr. Ugly"!!!...A black skirted 5/8 ounce spinnerbait, with a chartruese colorado blade, and a tomato colored grub on the back...Even Dee thought it looked ugly, but it sure did bang em' one day...Remember Fishermen's Cut Xman, on that cloudy rainy day in 88' when we smoked em' on that blade?...Even got us 2nd in the 2nd Hook tournament ever held...Sorry Vinny...

Thanks for the tip Jerry Bettencourt back in the 80's...Andy G., didn't you throw the black with chartruese blade on the delta, too?...I think Bobby D made that spinnerbait, too...Just add the orange grub tail...Don't tell anyone, Har!...Throw on cloudy days especially!!!...

Still hard to beat a jig, though...But, if you're going to throw a spinnerbait, try these colors...

A fav of mine is a nice 7/16, Black/Blue StrikeKing Midnight Special with a 3" black/blue Mr. Twister Sassy shad on the back end.

It's got the big diamond embossed colorado blade that puts out pretty good vides.

I have good luck with a white skirt and double gold willows. Sounds funny, but works great!

Keep your eyes open for the new SPRO spinnerbait that OT Fears is working on. It should be out soon.

It's not the bait, it's the method.
In cold stained water, I work the spinner bait like a jig. This is especially effective in depths of 8-12 feet.
If I'm at a shallow water fishery, I'll work it a little bit faster. I do kind of a slide and wind, geriatric style - like a jerk bait on 'ludes, dontchaknow.
In the deeper water though, it's purely a drop, scoot, scoot, crank, drop, scoot, scoot, crank (wash, rinse repeat) type of thing.
Again, it's not the blade, it's the retrieve. Ask anybody who's ever fished blades with me, I throw one bait 365.
Like Nike; Just Do It. I hope this helps.

Peace,
James

Persuader E-Chip

Post by SABP »

Black and red or chart. with gold blades.

The e-chip works great in dirty cold water. Outfished the regular blade for me all last year 5-1. Same blade set-up. One had the e-chip one did not. Both Persuaders.

It really does make a difference in stained water. It sends out a little pulse that goes out about 2 ft and helps the fish target, locate and react to the bait. The pulse is supposed to be similar to the response of a panicked baitfish.

Was developed by a university who studied the effect of baitfish when they are attacked.

All I know is it works well when the water is stained. I have used it on Folsom, Oroville, Clear Lake and the Delta with the white skirt, chart and even black and they eat it better than a regular blade.

When the water is clear or slightly stained the regular Persuader blade keeps up with the e-chip one. When it is dirty it makes a difference.
