Ranger boats

Post by brambo0311 »

What is the difference between a 488vs and a 492V? I am boat hunting in the classifieds, and have no idea what I am looking at. Plus what ever I get needs to fit in a 24' garage.

Look up the models on the Ranger Specs page at bassboatcentral.com. The specs for every model since 1988 are listed...

BASICALLY:
THE 488VS HAS A 15" SET BACK, LIKE A TRANSOM JACK WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE LESS DECK SPACE, AS TO THE STRAIGHT 492V HAS NO SET BACK. NOW IF IT WAS A 492VS IT ALSO WOULD HAVE A 15" SET BACK, BUT ALSO IS 14" LONGER...ALSO THE 492 SERIES IS WIDER BY 1 1/2 INCHES...............BELIEVE ME THAT 1 1/2 INCH MEANS ALOT ON THE DELTA AND CLEARLAKE !

JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH OF INFO I DID OWN ONE ONCE . BOTH GREAT BOATS !!

I am checking the classifieds on this site, they are both 94's and the 492 has a 225 hp. The 488 is a 150 hp I think. I think I will need a boat with at least a 200hp. I have a ton of gear and am 265lb so I want to be underpowered. But I dont know if it will fit in the garage.

The 488vs SHOULD have a 200hp. I have one, and anything less will not work. Both are nice boats. The 492 is more of a big cruizer and the 488 has more of a sports car like feel. The 492 might be a little better in rough water but the 488 will be faster and use less fuel. You just have to weigh the pro/cons and get what is best for you. They both will take up about the same space in your garage.

If you want to drive a 488vs with a 200efi, I'm on the Delta about every other weekend. You can take mine for a spin.

Hey brambo , I have a 488 vs w/200 Merc.I believe the length from the back of the motor to the end of the tongue on trailer is close to 25'(I don't have a fold-away tongue , but the tongue is removeable by quick release), if ya need I can go out take exact measurements.

I actually only have 22' But the outboard can slip another 2' past the washer and dryer. I already moved them and the plumbing to get as much room as possible. I am just trying to find out what will fit and what kind of boat I want. I am going to buy one in march for sure. I know with everyone in forecloser if I show up at the door with 15 grand in cash I should get a good deal on something. I just dont know much about the older ranger boats. I know a TR 20 triton will fit but the X wont. A couger will fit put the Puma wont. And all 19 footer will make it, but most are the size of a 20 footer. I have been in all brands, and dont know enough to say I like one better than another, they are all rocket ships to me. I just dont understand the whole WD-40, X-14 nomenclature that ranger does. It doesnt seem to have a pattern or anything. But that site helps me out a ton, at least I figure out length now. I will call these guys in the classifieds and see if they will throw a tape on it for me. Thanks

I went and looked at a 488 VS with 200 merc efi.. he had to put it at an angle to get in an older home 2 car garage.. I think its about 25 ft over all,, but a 492 vs will be longer yet (set back) where as a 492 v will be close to the same as the 488 vs.. confused yet?? LOL--ez

I have a buddy that owns a 487vs they are a nice boat. 488vs has one to many consoles. LOL

Do what I did and while backing your boat the first time into the garage just punch a new larger hole into the wall making it fit perrrrfet.

No really you will just have to angle your boat in your garage it will fit. They are both nice boats just get the one that makes you look the coolest. (coolest meaning over 20')

If I was in the market for a new boat and money was a concern, I think that I would call Mike Tuck and make him an offer that he couldn't refuse.

That 188 cert that he has could be a great buy for someone who was looking to save some major dough over retail.

Thanks guys,

I am trying to see what I can fit in the garage, so before I make an offer on a boat, I will know it fits. I cant angle much in the garage, one side is 4 feet deep in tackle, the other is all welders and tools. I have sold or given away all I can stand to part with to fit this boat. If I could keep the wife from throwing stuff in there it would be a done deal already. If anyone see's a once in a life time deal shoot me a PM. Thanks

BrothA Mike told me to buy it... REPEATEDLY .... Ranger 488VS with a new Opti fully loaded and detailed and warrentied for along time. I kicked the bucket because I have two boats already and I need to sell at least one.... I asked BrothA mike to call him up last week and ask if it is still available so I can look at it and possibly low-ball him..... --If I could of given away for cash my two other boats -- I would only be in for 5-6k in "Todays" market.

Turns out he took another low ball already !! -- Just my luck....... ( It sold for $15500 -- and he put a new Opti on it only 2 years ago with low hours for $13k  )

The Market still is and will remain for along time Very SOFT !! Take your time and look everywhere- Craigslist for all of CA, NV, ID, WA, OR, AZ .. BoatTrader.com, Local shops that sell boat on Consingment, News Papers on-line of their Calssifeds -- and WB of Course. -- Don't be afraid to travel to look if you have the time.

Found one and refered it to a BrothA in a different state- Looks like everything he wants and in brand new condition at a give-away price. Image

There is a 19' Nitro on WB as well for sale at a great price.... I believe I am going to take great heed to my wifes wishes and sell at least one boat -- if not both boats before I look to move into a bigger boat for the family and I. (The Nitro 911CDC has always captivated my eye. ) -- If I am dead ........ I will never be able to enjoy any boat.

Good Hunting to you Brambz ..... Image

PS- I looked at a Ranger 492v that has been for sale for ALONG time with no takers and always for sale. NADA booked it at $9.3k I offered him $11k just to see if he really wanted to sell it ..... Boat was not worth it at $11k even at that as the hours on Yama can not be documented and was not burning Yama oil, front TM underpowered, graphs outdated, and one other thing that I thought was hokey with the livewell drain to the bielge...

$10.2k -- I would of prolly bought it. AFTER I HAD FRANK AT INLAND GO THOUGH IT - on my dime for $175. -- It did have new tires on the trailor.........
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

The 492V may be faster than the 488VS based on the HP. I have a 492VS and will guarantee it won't fit in your garage. I would buy the 492 over the 488 for the size and layout. Depending on the model year, the 492 will handle longer rods in the lockers, and with a jackplate added should ride just fine. My 492VS with a 6" jackplate runs mid 70's gps, handles like a cadillac and fishes 3 people with plenty of room. It's like an aircraft carrier with the decks it has. I love mine... :D

Dido,
Dido
Dido,
On th4e Ranger 492Vs with due console and a 225. Evinrude or a Opti 225 hp.

At the time it was the Cadillac of Ranger, Big, Bad and Fast, plus you can store a ton of stuff in there and still have room left over.

If ya can find a way to get it into your garage, I would say go for it you will never regregret having a bigger boat but always wonder what a larger one would be like!
On clear lake or the delta when the swells come up!!
Yeah ? It's Me Again, SO WHAT!!!!!
