Anyone Else Feeling Da Pinch-And Will It Impact Your Fishing
Today I went to Costco and debated for over 5 minuets in weather or not to get the 2 gallons of 2% milk for $1.80 more than the non-fat.......... Ain't that silly ??
After I walked out of Costco alot lighter in the pocket I stopped by and visied with Frank at Inland-Marine since I was in the neighborhood and played Katsup with him. -- ALWAYS a pure Joy in bs'ing with Frank and his co-workers !!
Then I stopped by the gas station -- and my card stopped on the $75 limit ..... And my truck was only 1/2 full !!
Then this afternoon I recieved a notice in the mail-- That my Family Plan for Kaiser went from $331.49 to $541.92 a month for 2008 !!
I know for DAYUM sure my 4% raise this comming Febuary will not cover that alone !!
Wife just told me that we are cutting out our Digital service package and "saving" $33.95 a Month. There goes my HBO series of The Wire that I have been waiting for-- and all of the boys On Demand shows of Cody/Zack. -- That is nothing more than a piss in the bucket of trying to advance forward in today's world truth be told....
I know MANY close Bro's in the realestate, loan, construction, personal service, mills that have lost their jobs or settled for working for less and harder with way more hours away from ther family in sacrafice -- and some others that have even had to turn their homes over to the banks -- after all they put into them.
I have been trying to sell a boat that I started at $11,200 last spring -- I can not sell it for $4000 even now from CraigsList !!
We are getting by okie -- My family and I will more than likely not be able to fish ClearLake for the fisrt time this next year -- or Folsom/Berriessa even and will gladly stay here in the Delta doing our thang.
I was wondering how many else are seeing and feeling the very negative impacts of every part of our economy -- and if it will affect your fishing/hunting/family time in the outdoors this 2008 ??
Bestest to us all,
Dan

I am blessed with a stable county job. But gas price is killing me. I am going to buy a house when it hits rock bottom. Fish are flocking to me like hair on soap. So things are good. My dad told me a few years back when I was haveing a tuff time, "If your kids arnt in St Jude you dont have sh#t to worry about" Some of the best advise I have every got. Makes me think about how small my problems really are.
Dan I am in the market for a cheap used boat come febuary. So shoot me a e-mail of it if you havent sold it by then.

Slippy I have 4 kids you need to stop by some afternoon before you spend anymore money. Its a full on 24hour circus. I am sitting here at work with spit up on my shirt, oatmeal in my hair, a diaper in my lunch box, and I just pulled a sock out of my pant leg. Oh and I havent slept longer than 5 hours in 4 years. But its worth it.

Yup, fixed income here - Social Security. It'll go up 4% first of year, but so will the pad fee on my mobile home and so will utilities. Gas prices are killing me. Seems all oil companies are going to ethanol, so added additives for the boat motor. All three batteries on the boat went belly up at the same time. Got a nice offer for three Trojan certificates, but can't pony up the $200 to buy them. So the boat is beached. Need new glasses. Free from VA, but gotta come up with $100 for progressives. Insurance keeps climbing. Groceries keep going up.
Other than that, life is swell.

Dan, i feel you brother. its tough with everything going up in price these days. It makes it hard on alot of us. I have to cut back on this, and that all the time. Tourney fishing is expensive, and I'm not talking about the entry fee, its all the other things that go with it. I'm here for you man, and you know that!

It already has, and anybody that says it hasn't is probably full of beans.
I am not really sure what all the stats mean, but I just can't spend on fishing like I did a few years back.
Fishing is great, but the dollar power for me has diminshed. I just don't have the denero to throw around, enter this/enter that.
It got so bad at one point, I let my boat insurance lapse!
Still have the boat, but I need to sign with somebody before I forget, and whack the lower unit off the bote! (Cooch spelling of boat.)
Things are expensive right now, including fuel. And those expenses are going to trickle down, through fuel surcharges.

Whine?
No whine, just stating the buying power and where its at, which was the question asked in the initial post.
But thanks for the offer anyway.

Paid $21,500 for my first house! And...
...could barely afford the $219/month house payment. Earned $850/month with a family of 4. Times were tight but we survived. The year was 1977.
Today, a used boat costs more than I paid for a 3 bedroom house. My auto insurance for 2 trucks runs almost as much as my monthly payment for my first house. But, that's all okay because I earn a lot more money now than I did back then. Don't get me wrong, times are still tight...especially with the stinking government stealing more each month than I grossed back in '77. But, I'm not complaining. I fish a little less now but I enjoy it more. I spend less on travel and vacations but have learned to enjoy the budget-limited trips far more than when I took everything for granted. All-in-all, life is better now than ever before and guess what...It's going to get even better!!! No, I don't have any prospects about making more money or retiring so I can spend more time fishing. On the contrary, as times get tighter, I seem to appreciate what I have a lot more. Maybe I'm just rationalizing...that's okay, it works for me! LOL!

Feel Your Pain.
Been out of work since March this year due to housing /Construction went in the toilet. And the prospects of getting new job doesnt look to bright because of competition of all the others in same spot....... So the boat sits a lot. At Kaiser hitting just about $800.00 a month and gas going for $3.50 a gal.
Ive see it before and it will happen again. This time we are to blame for this one and the banks and builders as well. Hey when there was a line of people to offer you more money for your realistate than the next guy in line who is to blame?
But I do have a bright side too, Two fine sons, One who is celebrating his first year of employment as a planner at Shasta County and the other who is soon to complete his education at Chico State. Plus a Wife who has been crazy enough to put up with my silliness for 35 years.
So what few times I can get on the water is just that much better.

Re: Whine?
Well Andy I actually agree with you. The power of a dollar isn't the same as it used to be. My point is that we all have a choice to make. We can accept the fact that we are going to have less or we can figure out how to make more.
I always tell my wife, "Don't worry honey, it's only money, I'll make more!".
I was flat broke and bankrupt 9yrs ago and I decided that wasn't any fun. I made a choice. I wasn't going to accept the circumstances that I was in. I have come a long way since then and I just want people to know that there is a better way and that I am willing to help anyone who is ready to help themself.

I feel it too. I am actually considering getting a 175 XS motor on my next boat instead of a 225 because it gets a lot better gas mileage!
Re: Whine?
I'm a single guy and I've been blessed with more money than I knew what to do with for a long time but its finally catching up to me as well. I know of a wide-open swimbait bite, I've got the time off coming up and I just don't think the gas is worth the drive... this is a sad day indeed!

Re: Whine?
Took an old friend of mine to the Delta last week, he was complaining because he used 10 gallons of gas to troll for stirpers the week before. So i showed him my gas reciepts for our trip. The boat and suburban were both near empty and it cost $265.00 to fill them up. Before i even got home my wife called and says what the hell did you buy at unical that cost that much. Just a little gas dear. that didnt go over to well.

Though I do not have a boat I do(or did)alot of traveling to chase big bass. But do to the costs of gas my trips have been cut in half this year.I also have 4 kids and need to work 2 jobs just to barley keep them in school and feed them all.And like Dan said, when I go to the store I do find myself looking around for deals alot more than before.Costco can be a killer,I should know that is one of my jobs.lol

Kinda off subject but I thought this might help a bit.
If you are with the VA and have a combat related disability total of 60% or more. You can get a state parks pass and federal parks pass. All launch and camping facility use is free. You can also get your fishing liceance for 5.85. It aint much for getting busted up but I use the heck out of my passes.

I too, am on a fixed income..I don't own a boat or even a vehicle..But I do love my fishing..Fortunately several of the "nutcases" in my area have been able to assist me as I also assist them..Any time you can virtually cut your fishing expenses in half gas wise can't hurt..I would think the team type fishing would have a boom right now..

Nice of ya to think of that, Brambo, but my disabilities aren't combat related. I do take advantage of Senior's Discounts whenever I can though. Midweek at Markley is $10.

Re: Anyone Else Feeling Da Pinch-And Will It Impact Your Fis
I dont get to take out my poor champion anymore unless I have a backseater! I looove fishing alone, but I just dont get to anymore. I need someone to split the costs. The most annoying part about increasing gas prices is that it is about damn near better to bite the bullet and pay 20 dollars at markley cove than to drive down the road to cappel and launch for free. I still go to cappel only because I refuse to support a business that has the nerve to charge 20$ for a launch fee.
A lake that is only 22 miles from my front door costs about 50$ to fish, not including the stop at the taco truck in winters.

Re: Anyone Else Feeling Da Pinch-And Will It Impact Your Fis
That's exactly what I've been doing for the past year or so. Markley's launch fee is actually $15 but I still forego the drive to Capell and eat the fee...RyanThoni wrote:The most annoying part about increasing gas prices is that it is about damn near better to bite the bullet and pay 20 dollars at markley cove than to drive down the road to cappel and launch for free.

Its amazing to me that prices of gas goes up on the big travel holidays and all summer then drops back down. A big scam and a drag for those that cant take that yearly trip because of these fools that want to raise the prices of gas. last week I paid $3.85 a gallon this week $3.39 a gallon. Thats tha sh*% that really gets my blood ta boil. Anyway I think the people that run this gas scam dont own a boat or fish I have no control over it so I deal with it just like taxes Life itself is a challenge though, but thats what makes it fun and if you think about it life is free, you just have to pay to live

I remember reading a 1908 Sears Roebuck catalog
In the 1908 Sears catalog a pair of workshoes cost $3.50, pretty cheap huh??
The problem with that price is that a working man made an average of $1.00 per day. So he had to work 3.5 days to buy some work shoes. If a guy is making $20.00 per hour now it means if the shoes cost him 3.5 days of work they would cost $560.00. Not very cheap huh??
In 1939 my parents bought a new chevrolet 4 door sedan for the wonderful low price of $960.00. My father was driving a truck for 60 hours a week for a gross pay of $30.00 or $.50 per hour, which means that he had to work 1840 hours to pay for that car.
1840 hours at $20. per hour earns you $3680 which will buy you a car probably 3 times as good as the 39 Chevrolet was.
Gasoline for that 39 Chev. was $.12 per gallon, so therefor my father could buy a touch over 4 gallons of gasoline for one hour of work. .Today the guy earning $20. with gas at $3.33 could buy 6 gallons of gas.
If you use these numbers you will see that things were more expensive almost 60 years ago than they are right now

well selling my 20'er and buying that 16' with a 90 is sure looking good about now. I used to fish one day on 40 gals. now I use maybe 6. I thought about selling my 1 ton but at 60 instead of 75 I'm getting about 18 so if it doesnt sell thats OK. Yes I think about the price of fuel a lot , but its the wife that has to write the check not me
Re: Anyone Else Feeling Da Pinch-And Will It Impact Your Fis

WELL JIM;
TO ME A GOOD PAIR OF BOOTS TODAY COSTS ME ABOUT $ 150.00.
I AM LUCKY IF I MAKE $ 25 TO $ 50 A DAY. SO THAT STILL TAKES ME 3 TO 4 DAYS TO PAY FOR MY BOOTS AND THAT IS BEFORE TAXES.

I could've sworn that I paid $15 to launch there last month. Maybe it's $15 now that it's the off-season (but $20 during peak summer season)...RyanThoni wrote:Blue - Last I checked they raised there price to 20! I couldn't believe it. That **** is just crooked if you ask me.
Re: Anyone Else Feeling Da Pinch-And Will It Impact Your Fis
i dont complain much about the gas prices if it is under $5 a gallon, that is cheap for what I am used to paying!

This belongs in the General Discussion section, but since it's posted on the Fishing Forum here's my response:
Good point Jim but you forgot to mention the most important thing. The manufacturing jobs Americans use to have are currently in China, Vietnam, Taiwan, India, etc.....................As we continue to buy those shoes you are referring to today built at slave labor wages, and priced as they were built in the USA is placing more hardship on the middle class.
Example: Average price of a Nike tennis shoe = $85.00 dollars. What do you think it cost Nike to mass produced that tennis shoe in Vietnam with wages below a $1.00 dollar? What was the purchasing power of a dollar in the 50's verses today? (you mentioned shoes but not food, housing, energy and health insurance)
Do you think that the high tech industry is protected from the export of jobs? Go ask the 2000 Ex-Oracle employees as this company relocated their operation to India along with those jobs. Or the new Semiconductor plants Intel, National, AMD, etc built in China which would of resulted in thousands of Electrical, Mechanical engineering, accountants, clerical, etc... jobs in the U.S.
Prior to the current real estate problems nationwide, Michigan (automotive industry) was already dealing with a real estate crisis due to the thousands of jobs lost to overseas manufacturing. We have lost thousands of jobs in this country due to NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and GATT. How many American corporations sent their operations overseas in the 50's?
Another point not mentioned is the cost of medical insurance. As some folks noted above they are paying for their health insurance, and cost continues to go up every year which exceeds the rate of inflation. If you had a full time job with benefits in the 50's, were you paying part of or all of your health insurance? Answer is NO.
Almost everything was built in America during the 1950 and a product labeled BUILT IN THE U.S.A MEANT SOMETHING. Many people worked for the same company for years, and never worried about losing a job to some oversea operation. Today young families are struggling financially due to housing, medical, and cost of living. And it takes 2 not 1 to make ends meet today which was not common in the 50's.
We are living in different times today and the cost to raise a family is more difficult due to corporate greed, a government controlled more than any time in history by special interest (both parties), higher taxes, and a country paying 1.1 billion dollars a day ($365 billion a year) in interest to pay for the national debt. Americans in 1950 were proud of the country and purchased American products. Today, we have politicians that say I "support the troops" but then vote no to give them the funds to purchase the equipment to save their lives! What a joke! If we fought WWII and the Korean war (ended in a truce) in the 40's-50's with these type of politicians we would have LOST!
Sorry to ramble.............but to compare America and the struggles of 1950 to 2007 is like comparing apples to oranges.
Okay, now back to fishing!

Well I just sold my dream boat. With gas going up between the truck and boat it was killing me. Im now looking for something small that wont use much gas. Sux! Worst part is I was spoiled with that boat. Oh yeah, supermatt I'd be happy to pay for the gas if you took me along with ya on that open bite! All those times fishing with Jay and we never went out fishing together.

Popper, I don't know where you got your info on medical coverage in the 50's, other than some unions, if you had medical, you paid for it..Your employer never paid for any of it..Some of what you say is right on, some of it is nothing more than what you think ..
I remember the 50's and even some of the 40's..Yes some items were lower, but so were wages..Overall there really isn't a whole lot of difference, you make more money, things cost more..

Like most here I do have an opinion of the current situation on
"The American Dream"
As to why it is the way it is ? Lets just say NAFTA (have you driven through a housing construction site lately and seen who is working as carpenters these days as compared to who was 10 years ago)
But to keep it plane and simple so as not to get "All Beat Up" because I do state an opinion that may be opposite of some of those here. I will not.
Except; Max and Popper "I agree with most of what you both had to say"

When I had my pacemaker surgery I said, "Doctor are you sure this operation is really necessary?" He said, "Are you kidding, have you seen how much the Mercedes Benz have gone up in price?"

Without VA I don't know where I would be today. I developed Cronic Pancreatitis before age 65. VA took very good care of me, including a few days in ICU. And they continue to do so. It's good to know that the few years I gave to my country are reaping some benefits.

I agree with you 100% I could not have retired without the V.A. It is well worth the 6 yrs I gave to my country back in the early 60s. Mike Matthews U.S.N. 1963-1967
