Topwater Stripers

Post by Terry Smith »

I'm going out for the first time this year to find some Stripers this Friday. I would like to try for some early morning topwater stripers and was looking for anyone who has the HOT COLOR and LURE on the river right now? I normally SPOON and Rattle Trap but would like to try some topwater action. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you, Terry

I haven't been gettin any big dogs but I've had lots of schoolies up to mid teens on rainbow pencil poppers, 5" white fish traps and 3/4 oz smoke shad rat-l-traps...... the evening bite has been a little better for me than the early morning bite....

Spooks the super magnum. Lunker punkers, shell crackers. And wake baits. A/C plug, luckcraft california. Fish top early points and intersections. Then just slow roll fish traps on the bottom. I couldnt get any striper last monday out of russos, but the bass hit really good. I was throwing big baits, triple trout and a/c plugs for stripers but I wasnt going to complain with the large mouth I caught. The hot lure was a stacee 90, I think striper will hit that to if you stick it in front of them. Change out all the hooks for striper, they are pro's at straighting hooks.

Super magnum Shad Spooks,, massive blow ups, early and late, just before the sun peaks and right after it goes down! Brambo nails it, points and intersections where deep water meets a flat! And we are smackin em all day long on 6.5" White Big Hammer swimbaits with a 3/4oz jig head!

On their web site they show how to rig it with a stinger hook, Using a worm threader and puttin it on the paddle. Might be worth a try if it doesnt mess up the action or kill the fish.

Hey dan the trick with that shell cracker is not to move it much. Just smack it and make the wood clack and let it sit. I know its frustrating not to swim it all the time, but trust me it works. At least it has for me.

Big Hammers.......

There's not a whole lot more that I can add to the reviews of this bait made by Rob and Dennis. What I can say, is these baits flat out catch fish, both Stripers and blacks, like no other swimbait I have ever tossed. Over the years, I've spent a whole lot of money and time on gear and various swimbaits, I've caught a few fish here and there. Yet I have NEVER, run accross a swimbait that is so easy to fish, it's versatile and catches the numbers that I catch on a Hammer. Being a die hard jig fishermen, this particular swimbait suits me just fine and I feel right at home not only chuckin it a mile and swimmin' it back, but pitching and flippen the smaller baits to designated targets too.

40 minutes ago a buddy of mine from Veas, Paul Addi, called and said he was on the water chasin stripers and had actually caught a few blackies on the Basstrix. "Dude, you need to come to the water garage and let me give ya a real swimbait!" Paul left out of here 20 minutes ago with two of the 6.5" Pearl baits, a blue shad and Rob's Blue Gill and a 3/4oz jig head. As I'm writing the above, he calls to thank me for turning him onto this bait and a spot out back. He just nailed two 3+ and a 6+ in about 10 casts and wants ta know where ta git more! I can't believe they swallow the entire bait!

I can't thank Rob Belloni enough fer turning me onto these baits and Pete Wolf at Sunrize Tackle. Pete has offered me a Pro-Staff position on the Big Hammer team, which I have accepted with great enthusiasm! Look forward to hearing more about these swimbaits, they are simply awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry Rob, the secrete is out!

Cooch-

You said "Pearl baits" in Blue Shad and Robs Blue Gill. You also said Pete Wolf and "Big Hammer". :? :? :?

These are two different baits made by two different people.

I make the Pearl Swimbait here in Long Beach California. I was
just curious on the post dont see the name Pearl around very often because we are new. So... are you fishing the Pearl Swimbait
or was it a mix up of words and or color combos for Big Hammers.

P.S. By the looks of your resume you could catchem on what ever was in your lunchbox

Pete Wolf, owns Sunrize Tackle, Inc, in Goleta, Ca, and has a product line called Big Hammer. This product line consists of plastic paddle tailed swimbaits, Jig heads, as well as a series of plastic worms. My reference to Pearl baits(A variation of white), Blue Shad and Rob's Blue Gill, are just a couple of the Big Hammer color combonations. I have not had the pleasure of fishing your Pearl Swimbaits.

bruizer343-

If you want the Pearl Swimbaits my #6 is almost 7" and has a bigger profile than most plastics in this style. I have a few people who use them for stripers and greenbass and love them. I am also working on a prototype trout bait that has been catching fish at DVL. Greenbasserz tend to shy away from big baits with lead exposed, I assure you these kick insane, and are deadly on the green guys. But to ease the nerves of the fickle guys I have been working on a hidden head for the trout bait.
