Mostly Hickory but Balsa works if you find specialty long eye hooks and glue them in with 2 part epoxy.

My buddy made a nice hand carved swimbait with a plastic tail (similar to the Rago's?!) But he carved his out of Bass wood, seems a little too good to be true, but Bass wood to catch bass, it makes sense. I think with the rigging and everything and a small amount of weighting, he has made it inot a slow sink type.

Bass wood, check it out.

The boys at Stamina are fantastic.
That site has almost everything you would need to MAKE a first class bass tackle arsenal. Check out the weedless Rite-eye jigheads, it is an excellent grass jig and a good all-around short range jig, 5/8 oz is nice to just get a bump up from the old half ton.

you should clarify as to what kind of swimbait you want to make. Floater, slow sinker, fast fall, jointed, lipless?? are you trying to make a mold,one-offs?

Cedar is probably the best medium..We all know most woods will float, but some are better for carving than others..To me cedar is a definite happy medium for carving baits..

Im going to set up a bait building station in my garage. Looks like fun......I imagine the first dozen will be firewood.
