Recently got a lightly used Chronarch 101B. Love the reel but the grips are sticky; looks like the guy got some scent product (pro-cure, smelly jelly?) on them because I can still see some specks of glitter.
I tried cleaning the grips with hot water and dish soap, Murphy's oil soap, Windex and Formula 409; none of those worked. Septon grips are still tacky. I'm a little afraid to use acetone or paint thinner as I'm not sure that it won't damage the grip material.
Any ideas? Love the reel but can't stand the tacky grips!
Thanks, chinook

I put these on my Chronarch and Curados and like them a lot.
For the price they are worth it...

take off the handel and try some gunk off on the grips. that should do the trick!
Re: Help! Sticky Chronarch Handle Grips
Tried "Goof Off The Ultimate Remover"; used a toothbrush, scrubbed well then washed with hot water and soap. Now looks clean but still tacky!
Tried alcohol with a toothbrush; same result.
Tried toothpaste and the brush followed by hot water and soap with the brush.
After all that, the grips are still tacky!
This is the only Chronarch B that I own so can't compare it to others; maybe they're supposed to be this way?? I notice when the grips are wet, they feel great, not tacky at all but when they're dry, they're tacky.
I've got a Conquest 401 and the grip material looks similar but does not feel tacky.
Oh well, guess I can go with the covers StockOption steered me to or I can just dip my fingers in the water when using that reel. Strange but they feel just great when wet!
Guess I'll stop by a tackle shop and see if the new ones feel the same.
Thanks for the suggestions,
chinook

Re: Help! Sticky Chronarch Handle Grips
Try posting in the shimano forum. I have an antares ar with "sticky" grips, they are soft and supposed to be sticky to be non-slip. I don't know if the 101b has these but with all the stuff your doing to get the stickyness out, must be defective. I'll buy it off ya and send you some squeeky clean grips..

Re: Help! Sticky Chronarch Handle Grips
are you sure the shaft wasnt pinched to hard against the grip & preventing it from spinning ? if not then...........
WD 40 will clean them... spray it so it will flow between the shaft & grip, & spin the grip at the same time......... continue until it spins freely.

Re: Help! Sticky Chronarch Handle Grips
I Had a problem like that, the smelly jelly stuff got on there and it sort off melted the handles. They never got better, or cleaned up. I covered it with powder and it all stuck to that. It worked for a while but I ended up replaceing the handle. I think some of the scents with amino acids and proteins actually change the make up of the rubber on your gear and make it separate. Kinda like how they melt rubber worms.

Thanks for all the suggestions; I'll try some talcum powder and see if that helps but looks like I'm either going to have to get the grip covers or buy a new handle.
Nitro 912; there's nothing wrong with the grips mechanically, spin just fine. The rubber surface of the grips is tacky and sticks to my thumb and fingers.
Thanks again for all the suggestions,

You can Order a replacement handle on line. With all the home made cleanners and products folks have suggested your grips will be gone. You will have to buy a new handle any ways.
