Best "heavy" line to use on a spinning reel
Due to my inability to make short casts with a Senko on a baitcaster without getting overruns I choose to use a spinning rig for this.
I've lost fish while using 8# mono when they head into the weeds. I know the problem will be even worse fishing at Clear Lake or the Delta.
That said, what's the best, heaviest line I can use without major headaches on a 2500 series spinning reel?
Do I need to stick with mono or is there a soft fluouro that will work? I've heard enough negatives about braid (and don't know if it can be used on a spinning) that I'm inclined to avoid it, but I'm open.

I would check out the fused type superlines like Fusion. They handle ok on spinners and are pretty tough in the weeds.

12 - 15lb P-Line Floroclear,
I put it on my wife's for pitchen in the Delta and at Clear Lake.
Work's Fine, just check your line capacity to not get spinning overruns and loops.

I have been using 30 lb. Power pro with no leader for heavy cover and skipping,
20 lb. Powerpro with a short fluoro. leader. for my drop shot rod.
That has eliminated 99% of my line twist problems that were regular!

On my Stradic 2500's I could not run 12# FC with a .012" dia without problems. A limber small diameter mono like XL is probably your best bet if your after the largest # rating. 20# braid might also be an option.

I use power pro and tie on about 10 feet of seagar 12-15 lb. Use a uni to uni or my favorite a tony pena knot. cover it with super glue and you wont feel the knot through the guides. If you want to run straight mono use p-line flouro clear, or seagar. If you run all your line out behind the boat with nothing tied on it and slowly crank it in, it will take out all the twists and spool back on really nice. If the mono gets twisted just repeat, and it will be like new again. The biggest problem is your coming off a large diameter spool onto a small one. You have to get that all straightend out.

i put 20lb fireline on my spinning outfits and then a barrell swivel . then i make up flouro leaders of 10lb for clear water and 14lb floro for places like clear lake and the delta.. i make up several leaders ahead of time so if i break off i just have another ready to go .. works good for me..

Bob,
Are you using a barrel swivel with weightless Senkos? Doesn't it affect the way they fall?
What lenghth leaders are you using?
Thanks to all for the excellent advice regarding line options.

I use 10 and 12lbs XL on my spinning rods depending on where I am fishing. People seem to hate mono, but not me!

Would the backlash problem decrease if you tried pitching the bait instead trying a short cast? Have you tried using a baitcaster that excels with the lighter weights?Lookin4Bass wrote:Due to my inability to make short casts with a Senko on a baitcaster without getting overruns I choose to use a spinning rig for this.

Lookin4Bass,
Grab a bait casting rig, go out to your back yard and practice pitching and when you're done go back and practice some more.
You'll be surprised how quick you will learn.

Re: Best "heavy" line to use on a spinning reel
Mike - thanks for the excellent Yamamoto articles. Seems to validate the use of spinning tackle for a wide variety of applications typically considered bait cast territory.
I agree with those of you that suggested I hone my bait casting skills but they're actually not that bad. I can cast jigs, cranks, spinners (depending on the wind) etc all day with minimal overruns. But with most of those baits you've got some time to pull out the excess should overruns occur.
I watched my partner at a Clear Lake (club) tournament a few months ago get bit on what seemed like every other cast of his Senko into the tullies.
The bite came within seconds of the bait touching the water. It left no time for fumbling to clear overruns. With that in mind I think the spinning rig with braid may be just the ticket.

Re: Best "heavy" line to use on a spinning reel
Don't have much time this morning, so let me make this simple.
Monofilament and fluorocarbon are just crap (as a main line, but makes good leaders), and shouldn't even be considered "fishing line".
"Fused" lines like Fireline are kinky, coily, garbage that resemble dental floss, and are made for one reason (straight scoop from industry insiders) > Because its cheaper to produce than true braided lines.
I hear some baitcasting guys say, "Well that's all fine, but braid doesn't work well on baitcasters". Hmmmm. I know some guys that use it on baitcasters, without any problems, but since I use almost nothing but spinning for everything from Bluegill to Bat Rays, that's never a problem for me. And if I did use baitcasters, I'd sooner switch to spinning gear with braid, than mono on a baitcaster.
BTW Lookin4bass, you said "heavier" line..... But I assume you mean "stronger" line. Because the fact is, while true braided Spectra is WAY stronger than any monofilament, its also WAY lighter, and more manageable. If you really wanted "heavier" line, I'd have to recommend some lead core trolling line (which would probably be about as fun to fish with as mono LOL
Who me ? Opininated ???
