Depends on size of jig and depth that I am trying to fish.

Usually for 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs I use 12# or 14# Sunline Shooter Fluorocarbon.

For 1/2, 3/4 and One-Ton jigs I will usually use 14# or 16# Sunline Shooter.

This is for lakes like Oroville & Shasta.

I am right there with Mr. Collins in terms of line size, I also only use high quality flurocarbon on my jig reel.

Cooch

It don't matter.......

what type of jig I'm tossing, with the sensativity, invisability, abrassion resistance, strength and smaller diameter of fluorocarbons, I use 20# Sugoi anywhere, every time, no matter where I fish. It's just too simplified and I have no fears or second thoughts when fishing the heavy lines with jigs.

A 2nd place and boat, in a Bassmasters at Oroville, fishing a variety of jigs in gin clear water, from 0-6 feet, is my proof of that!!!!!!!!!!! It's the old KISS thought process, Keep It Simple Stupid! This may not work for everyone, but it sure does fer me.

I just switched from using 15LB Yozuri Hybrid to Pline Halo 20lb fluoro and it's made a would of difference. Less re-ties and more abrasion resistant. Have yet to break of a fish w/ the HAlo. A little pricey but woth every penny. I use it for my jigs, flipping and senko reels. Have yet to break one off. Knock on wood.

:) for me.

Proper line choice depends on a lot of factors. First off is the choice of jig/hook. If you are fishing a heavy hook or a brush guard you will need heavier line. If you are fishing a light 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig with no weed guard and a sharp light wire hook a lighter line is a better choice. Heavy line and light hooks can lead to broken or bent hooks. Light hooks also tear big holes and throw easy with heavy lines and big hook sets.

Next I have to consider the rod being used. The rod action need to match the line choice and hook type. When fishing deeper I want a little longer rod to move more line on hook set, but one that has an action that till not allow a fish to pull free from a light wire hook when fighting it close to the boat. If my rod choice is limited I can compensate with the choice of lines, but have to ensure I have the proper line for the rod and hook I am using.

Depth also makes a difference. If you are fishing deep or in heavy wind a heavier line will have more bow and reduce your feel for the bait. Florocarbon is a big help and braid can be used to improve feel and reduce line drag.

Next is your hookset. If you have a flip style power hook set and are not controled enough to lighten it up, you are stuck fishing heavier line. Light line jigging requires a controled hookset and matching all your equipment become more critical. With a big hook set I also like a line with more stretch like Big Game.

There are days they will eat anything and there are days when a jig on 6# test will out produce one on 12# test by 4:1. I had Korny show me think on Oroville once fishing behind me. He kicked my butt with 6# test. If the bite is tough or the fishing pressure is very high I may drop down to 10# or 8# test. It is a fact that the lighter the line the more bites you will get.

For me I start with 12# Florocarbon and go up or down from there. I use florocarbon 80% of the time, but if fishing over 80 feet I may use a floro leader on braid. For a 1 ounce jig I may jump up to 15# test. I may use the 15# if fishing in brush.
I differ from Cooch in that I don't keep it simple, I go for the choice that gives me the best tool for the job. Since I have a good selection of rods to choose from, make my own jigs, and have good hookset control I can vary my approach to suit the conditions I am fishing. What it the best for you though depends on your style of jig fishing.

for thin wire jigs I like 15# Seaguar Invisx for thick wire jigs 20# Seaguar Invisx and occasionally 65# Power Pro braid for the real dirty/chunky water.

Jigs - Regular old 17# P-Line Flourocarbon. Black and Blue Box. No, I don't change for really clear water lakes, in fact that is the same line I use on Folsom with pretty good results.

I typically only fish the delta or clear lake and never use light wire hooks,, so my input doesn't apply to other lakes or spotted bass fisheries..

I use 15# Seagaur Flouro for casting presentations or dropping on rock piles.. 20# seaguar for pitching to rocks or in relatively clear water. 50#+ braid anytime I can get away with it. You will get a rock solid hookset with braid like nothing else,,,, ask Sapp,, just keep in mind braid can fray and break if your dragging it across rock so check your line and retie.

I agree P-line 100% Flurocarbon but I'd like to try one of P lines new co-polymers (Stealth or Halo).

I have used P-line 12lb 100% floro since it came out on the deep mountain lakes with great success...HOWEVER, I tried Sugoi 16lb this spring and I don't think P-line will ever be on my rods any more...it is tough and it will catch any fish out there...it is very abrasion resistant

..and the great thing about it is I can use the same line for senko's in the delta....it saves me money...try Sugoi..you won't be disappointed...

Just go out and get yourself a spool of the above mentioned lines and choose for yourself. You're the best judge for want you like. I personaly fish P-line on just about all my rods and reels eccept for 3 and I use Stren Braid, it's because I like that line and it has worked for me. Steve

20lb!! wow.. At Shasta I only use 12 lb for up to 3/4 oz jigs, and I have yet to break off. I see a nick, and it gets re-tied right away.
