Cheaper to repaint boat, or wrap it?
I was interested in this. Do you think it would be cheaper to wrap the boat like the Western Bass Boat, or have it repainted? Also, what is required of the finish to have it wrapped? Let me know...

not sure what a paint job costs but a wrap will run you about 2500.00ish depending on graphics and such. Just a ballpark estimate based on what I found when I was considering a wrap for my boat. Try these guys for an estimate, they are in manteca. T&A vinyl graphics ask for Tuey #209-858-9138

Dave - I have been quoted around $2200-2500 for a wrap on an 18 foot Ranger. I would think that you can get a Gel Coat re-paint for cheaper than that. If you are serious about finding out pricing, get ahold of Corey Fenske or contact LRT graphics (the ones who did sTony's boat).
Re: Cheaper to repaint boat, or wrap it?
Gel coat is extremely labor intensive I bet your talkin at least double the wrap probably triple or more , paint would be your best bet depending on the prep work needed and the quality of paint . How long does a wrap last ? with marine and UV exposure .

I had an older boat a few years ago and thought about getting it repainted/gel coated before selling it. They told me at that time that it would cost about $1,000 for a jet ski size portion and I had an 18ft Ranger...
very expensive unless the price has come down dramatically. I would go with the wrap if it came down to just price.

probably cheeper to wrap it but the wrap only last 2 or 3 seasons at most. the wrap wont adhere to oxidized finishes. if the boat has any dings or isnt perfect it will show on the wrap. i would weigh in the factor of how long i planned on keeping the boat. if not long, wrap, if you plan on keeping it a while go with the new gel coat.

Fishin Dave,
The answer to you question is trial and error. Some people say it wont work, it has to be a perffect surface, and so on. The true way to see if it is going to work is to contact me and we can try a sample of material and see how it will hold.
If your gel coat is oxidized and very rough, then it may cause the final results to have a rough look to it. But it will stick.
As for the long term effect. The new materials out are rated for 7- 10 years with a uv lamination. It is best to remove them after about 4 years, this is the manufactures time frame for a clean removal. These ratings are mostly for cars and such, were they dont take the abuse. So the honest answer is, as good of care as you want to give it. You can get 3-4 years out of a wrap if you take care of it. I'm sure you are not as rough on your boat as a touring pro, so every thing will last a lot longer. The warenty is only going to cover man. defects, or shop errors.
The other nice thing about wraps are, if you hit it and rip part of it, you can always reprint a small section and patch it. Sure you may see it up close, but step back 10 feet and you wont even see it.
As for the cost. I bet you could wrap your boat 3 times, to equal the cost of regel coating.
Anyways, feel free to give me a call and we can see if this is something you will want to persue.
Thanks
