Personal best spotted bass

Post by Larry Hemphill »

I took a friend to Collins Lake for a few hours of fishing in tough conditions - clear water and bluebird skies. When you least expect it, a good one bites - at 2:30 in the afternoon no less. Who catches a good bass at that hour with no shadows?!! Well, I did. Don't ask me how but my brown/orange Rodstrainer jig with #180 Yamamoto double tail grub/with Smelly Jelly must have looked and smelled like the real thing as a 7 lb 7 oz spotted bass ate it. Landed her on 10# test Trilene - carefully! Updated my personal best spot from Collins by 3 ounces! Previous best was 7-4 from Collins in '96. Hope I catch her again when she is over 8!!!

Sweet Larry....awesome. My PB spotted bass doesn't even come close. I've used the 180 trailer on Oroville...but clear water and bluebird sky using a brown/orange jig with that trailer ? Interesting...guess I better give that a try ! Congrats...

Rain or shine - I use that color combo. Sometimes I use combinations with purple (black, blue, etc). My recent 9 1/4 pounder at Clear Lake (October) was caught on brown/orange Weapon jig with #180 (same) color Yamamoto grub. Water color doesn't seem to matter. Clear Lake water was dingy of course. Try it - you'll like it!!

Great fish Larry! Since I took that trip with you and you showed me that jig & trailer combo on Clear Lake, I hardly use any other jig. It has come through time and time again (never forget the Smelly Jelly!). Thanks for sharing such great info and that picture of a beautiful spot.

Congrats!

Hey Lunker Lar......

Post by Fish Chris »

Good job ! That is one heck of a Spot ! Way bigger than my PB of only 4.7 out of San Pablo.

Those Spots can be awesome sportfish. Beautiful ! Hard fighting ! ............. "if only they could just be kept away from our trophy Largemouth fisheries" :-(

I think it would be great if we had a couple lakes with "nothing but Spots" and then if we could actually get some heavy duty selective harvest going. I think a "trophy Spotted bass lake" would be really cool !

Anyway, congrats on an outstanding catch !

Beautiful Spot Larry!! You guys sure do grow them big out there in Callyfornia ;). My personal best is 6lbs here in Georgia. We just had our Spotted Bass State record broken several months back 8lbs and small small change. Lake Burton of all places. Great fish and thanks for the pic so I know what a 7lber looks like :)!
