Palomar with braid?
Palomar with braid?
Anyone have any problems with a palomar knot using braid? What knot do you prefer for braid? Thanks
Re: Palomar with braid?
I use the double Palomar (double up the line, then tie the palomar) and a couple of overhand knots after. The single palomar, I've had the knot slip.R.Cook wrote:Anyone have any problems with a palomar knot using braid? What knot do you prefer for braid? Thanks

Palomar works fine with braid. Just one knot. Leave a little tag though.

Re: Palomar with braid?
Try a San Diego Knot...I think that it is super easy and SUPER strong at the knot...I tye this will all my braid and have never had a problem...
I don't know if there is a site or instructions on tying the knot...
Take the line thru the eye and then back thru the same way..
hold the main line and tag end line in one hand and the loop that you created in the other hand..the hook should be able to slide back and forth on the 2 lines (thru eye). You will want to have about 7 inches of line on both sides of the hook (if hook in center of line). Bring both hands up and together and grab all 4 lines with one hand in the center of the line. Take the loop end of the line and wrap around all 4 lines (below your fingers that are holding the 4 lines) about 7 times or so. Then take the loop end and run it back up thru the new (little loop) that was created where your fingers were holding the 4 lines. You will now have the main line, the tag end and a loop all above the line wraps. Pull all of them at the same time slightly and then pull just the main and tag ends until the knot slides down to the eye of the hook. Then pull on the loop to tighten up around everything..give a good pull on each one seperately again..tag, main and loop...if done properly, you will have the tag end to cut and then the loop to cut, so you have 3 cuts to make...It is soo much easier to tye then it sounds like...It's a great knot...good luck!!!

Re: Palomar with braid?
Knots fail from a combination of pull force and rate of speed the force is applied. Super braids are usually Teflon coated or impregnated fibers and the Teflon allows the knot to slip.
You can only put about 8 lbs of line tension force with a typical bass rod before the rod breaks.
The braid knot is easy to tie, 100% knot strength; basically a double line clinch knot. Google "braid knot".

Re: Palomar with braid?
Smaller diameter braid, like 30# and under, are very small and can actually slip through the gap where the hook eye is closed back down to the shank on some of the super line hooks. Be sure the eye bend is closed, or tie a mono palomar on the hook, cut off the line, and slide the mono know down to the eye gap to keep the braid from sliding down and through.
I found that out the hard way, setting the hook, and getting a perfectly tied palomar knot back, with no hook or fish.
And leavy a 1/4" tag line.

i use it on my reel and never had a problem with the palomar knot.........
Re: Palomar with braid?
Not to hijack the tread... But since the Double San Diego Jam knot was mentioned.
Do any of you use this not with 15-25lb mono?
Any reasons why not to use it?
Thanks

Re: Palomar with braid?
Mono; the Palomar knot is esay to tie when using worm hooks and jigs. Improved clinch knot, Uni-knot or SD knot all work well for multiple hook or big lures. Use whatever you can tie well; in the dark, waves and wind. Some knots are very difficult to tie right under fishing conditions.

Re: Palomar with braid?
Ever since I switched to the double palomar I have not had one knot slip. Works Great!!! The regular palomar would slip off about once a trip.

Re: Palomar with braid?
I used to use the Trilene knot but had it slip with braid on the Rio Negro. My buddy showed me the palomar knot and we caught peacock bass up to 22 lbs using 80 lb spectra, never a problem and a peacock fights a lot harder than a bass.

Re: Palomar with braid?
Never had a problem with the palomar. After i tie the knot, I tie an overhand knot or 2, on the tag only, close to the knot to prevent any slippage. More so when the braid is new.
