as far as what kind of paint to use I have no idea. But the bright side is, if you REALLY mess it up, you can just paint it all white again and start over as you would be back to square one!

I've used regular model paint with 3 coats of spray-on clear coat over it. I'm also guilty of using nail polish its actually pretty hardy.

A well done rattle can job is also tough as nails, but I've never tried it on lures.

justflipit,

I have asked the same question. I was told that if you go to a Janns Netcraft or Stamina lure components, they have a special paint just for plastics. You might try calling them if you don't see anything in their catalog.

auto paints hands down.. they are the strongest paint i have came across. The composition of the bait isnt a big deal. Its all about your primer. SEM makes a great aerosol flexible primer for plastics. It will work for air brushed and hand painted baits.

Justflipit,
I know Chartreuse Shad is a great color, but you might consider keeping the white bait, just that, ..... all white.

I was fortunate enough to get one early and take it to the Amazon for peacock fishing, and that bait was the BOMB! the fish loved it there and I know the fish in the Delta and Clear Lake are gonna love it too.

Consider keeping it as is, and get a 2nd if you want to paint one up special.

model, nail polish are not the best paint. the swimbait co's will not tell the real paint to use but lurecraft (http://www.lurecraft.com/catalog.cfm/pl ... ic%2dlures) its the close to what the swimbait co's use

everybody pretty much uses auto paint. It is the strongest and doesnt fade in the sun. Make sure you get a proper clear coat that doesnt turn yellow from sun fade as well. Have fun tinkering around, its fun stuff when you catch a donkey on something you doctored up. Best of luck.

I can see that. Where do you get autopaint other than small amounts of touch up paint?

Go to www.tackleunderground.com, and ask your question.
Those guys know everything there is to know about hardbaits, softbaits, wirebaits.
The Punker maker himself, Jeremy, posts there from time to time.
You can always email him and ask him directly. He's really helpful with info about his lures, as long as you buy them.

You should just have Jeremy (Black Dog Himself) paint the colors you want, save all the headache... A true artist! Very few are talented enough to produce colors at his level....

Without trying to sound like a idiotic self promoter ill say this. Either have me custom paint you one or pay 12 bucks and ill paint your bait for you. You can also have your favorite lure painter you prefer paint it for you. It will save you a lot of time and frustration not to mention money for materials. A custom painter is already invested in the materials and equipment. After buying paint ,primer, and clear youll be in the hole a lot deeper than if you just have a custom painter do it. There are a lot of good painters out there and I personally have been known to paint a bait every now and then. Either way good luck! Use automotive everything for your materials and DO NOT RUSH. Take your time and be patient. Use all safety equipment as well( respirater, gloves and glasses!) Do not paint next to your wifes car either

That is a great offer.
I paint lures, so I know what's involved, and Jeremy's offer is a steal. Plus, he is really good.

Amen on the over spray.. learned that one the hard way. Little bro's Ducati got a dusting of primer. Jeremy's offer is a steal. Its very addicting one you get going though. I just bought a brand new Iwata gun the other day.. so nice. Im hooked on the hues (sp?) every time i go in the shop i pick a few new hues.. im up to around 15 or so.

It's a way safer bet to have someone sray it for you. +1
