First of all, this is a general question, not aimed at anyone or any organization.
Why do you suppose that all or most of the Team Circuits use scales that determine weight in increments of Hundredths, while the Big Boys, (FLW) opts to divvy it up in ounces? Are these scales really that good, when different influences come into play, like a few extra drops of water, a little gust of wind, fish bouncing around, etc. etc. Just wondering what some others might think.

It might be lonely at the Top, but it's a bitch, at the Bottom !
Re: Ounces vs. hundredths
In the European bass circuits they use kilograms. In east Texas, they use bushels.
The orgs started with ounces so they stay with them. Remember the early BASS scoring was pounds = points. And obviously, they are not concerned with ties and have means/rules to deal with them.

Murph,
I think it all comes down to what the orgs buy as a scale, and then what that scale can read out and what its accuracy level is. i dont think there is any real reason for the difference used.
Hundredths of a pound is more granular, but its not necessarily any more accurate, if the tolerance of the scale is the same for both measurements.
When you talk about Team trails, your talking more local orgs. As a TD myself, i know that the scale i have needs to be small and transportable to fit in my truck. Therefore, the scale i use is surely different than that of FLW and doesnt read in ounces.

Nobody remembers who came in 2nd place. Fish Hard - Play Hard!
Re: Ounces vs. hundredths
I know the scale I use is not effected by wind and it has auto lock and auto zero. check it out at pro tournament scales dot com.
I have the H2 Series.
to answer your question the reason the big boys use ounces is that there are less likely to be any ties after 3 or four days of fishing like there would be after one day.

Re: Ounces vs. hundredths
BASS is not using a fraction of an ounce. One ounce is much larger then a 100th of a pound. If we were comparing two decimal places of each then onces would be much more accurate.

The problem is.....
Sometimes the print media will report a 9 lb 11 oz bass as a 9.11 lb bass. Big difference!! That is the only problem I have with ounces as opposed to hundreths. One doesn't want their 7 lb 15 oz bass called a 7.15 lb bass! How rude, har!!!!!

Murph,
Here is a thought. Alot of Team and Regional Pro Am's are one or two day events. FLW and BASS are at least three so over three days the chances of a tie are much less so no need to go to hundreths.
