Osprey Tuning

Post by Duckman »

How do you get these to run straight and not lay on their side? I have seen them run great and slither through the water and look natural but mine run to their side. It does not seem to matter how slow or fast I retreave it. Is there a way to tune them? Does the line make a difference?

Jim if there is a fix I hope you post it because every one I have tried to throw does the same thing. I may still have them, not sure. But after 3-4 different baits I finaly gave up. They look great and the price is deffinately great. So is there a trick?

Which osprey are you guys talking about and what size? Is it the inline model or the top hook? How do you store the baits. I have many osprey baits and I have never had a probelm with them not running true.

Agreed, Ospreys are my personal favorite, and everyone I have runs true.

I have bought and fished literally hundreds of these baits (all sizes and styles) and as a whole, they swim great! This is a top notch company that, IMHO, make "THE VERY BEST" swimbait on the market! Your problem may be storage, all plastic baits have a memory, so it is important that you try to keep them in a straight position while stored. Also, if it is the inline heavy baits, you need to make sure that the hook is placed so that it pulls straight in the belly (if you are burying one barb of the treble). Clark Small

It is a 6'' heavy and I just bought it Saturday took it out of the box and fished it on Monday. I tried to repostion the treble hook but it did not make it run better. I am in no way knocking this bait I have seen them whack em on these, I just want to figure out how to make it run better.

I think you need to slow down your retrieve speed. They do run sideways and sometimes roll at high speed. But they do work well!

Try inserting..

a Mojo weight in the belly of the bait. This will usually cure a rolling/wobbling bait.

Duckman,

185 knows all about Ospreys in how they run...If you look on his rods, you would think he owned the company. The only thing miss'in in/or on the boat is the wings. LOL,,, Some place's he goes into "He thinks he has WINGS.

I have to calm him down and politily slap him once in awhile and tell him that its only 6 inch's of water over their and the boat has a 14inch draft. Of course he's young and won't listen to this old fart and we were stuck for 20 minutes. Shined the Prop up good tho!!!!! LOL!!!!

I have always had good luck with mine running true out of the box, I agree that the problem here might be the retreive speed. Not all swimbaits are designed to be burned back, some will work, others will roll. Try slowing it down see if that helps.

I want to thank Jim at Osprey for helping me out with my lure, he is a top notch guy and I never expected him to do what he did. I have nothing but good things to say about Osprey baits they catch fish. If you ask the right questions and don't slam a company and give them a chance to step up they usually will surprise you and do the right thing. Thanks Darrel

The biggest problem is storage. If you store the bait where the tail gets bent you will have an issue sometimes. Jim is the most stand up honest guy you could ever meet. One thing you can do is boil water, dip the tail, dont melt it!, and hang it from the eye and you are good to go. I have had little to no trouble with any bait from osprey including proto types. Alot of tackle stores dont store the baits properly which causes the kinking in the tail therfore causing them to turn.

By the way, if it is true out of the box with no storage issues, burning isnt an issue until it gets on short line...then it will turn because your rod angle changes. See my previous post about turning/rolling. One thing about Osprey, the owner is the most stand up guy in the business. As a pro staff guy for osprey, I have swapped baits with guys who had the same problem, dipped the tail, took em out the next day and no roll at all. For all you tackle shops, store em on pegs and you wont have a problem if you keep the nose up.
