My onboard charger has a flashing Red light?

Post by Marty »

I have a “Ranger Special Edition 3 Bank Pro” onboard charger. Each bank has 6 little lights and when you first start charging they all glow red and go out as the battery charges. When the battery is fully charged the last light goes Green.

Now I have one bank that only comes on with a blinking Red light. At first I thought the onboard charger was going bad but now I’m not sure. I switch the cables to the batteries trying to charge the battery that I thought was not getting charged. Now the blinking Red light is on the other bank. Does this mean I have a bad battery? One last think – this is the first time the light has blink like this in owning it for 4 years.

I don’t have an owner’s manual since I got the charger second hand.

Thanks

Try unplugging all leads, (removing all batt cables) to reset the charger,
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

It was probably made by dual pro. This is from their web site at dualpro.com

RED BLINKING LED.............NO BATTERY DETECTED This indication occurs whenever the charger circuitry cannot detect a battery. The charger circuitry will not allow charge current to flow under this condition. With the AC power supply cord unplugged, check the connection to the batteries for proper polarity (black wire to negative or -). Also check for corrosion free secure connections to the battery. Please call the factory at 1-800-742-2740 for further assistance.

I disconnected all cables and let it set for awhile and hook the cables all back. My connections and post are clean as clean can get. Again I revered the cables on the battery side and the blinking light moved to the other bank. I’m thinking cable or battery is bad but leaning towards the battery.

Some have in-line fuses molded in plastic you might want to check those and i've twisted the heads off the fuses replacing them and they seem not to be fried but inside the head of the fuse is broken and won't work.

On my Nitro with three bank charger I had one battery light flashing red . Thought it was charger call manufacturer and they thought it needed to be replace it was about 10 years old . But before I need that I took out the battery with the flashing light and had it check at the auto parts store and it was bad . Bought a new battery and that fixed the problem. Ray

FYI- if ur battery drains too low, some chargers will think its dead-dead and wont charge it. see if u can put a volt meter across the terminals and read what it says?? Worst case bring it to wal-mart or a place that can rapidly charge it. u can likely salvage the battery if its overdrained. (life may be impacted)

If I read this correctly you switched the leads and the light changed to other bank. So Charger is working. All onboard chargers have to read some voltage or they will not work. You need to get a seperate charger and jump start the battery in question for 10 minutes or so. This will give the battery some voltage so the charger can detect it. If problem doesnt go away then your battery is toast.

Call me and I will explain

When mine was blinking I took it out and had it tested the battery was dead. Bought a new battery hooked it up and I was good to go.

Sorry to say but your battery may be dead. Have it tested.

I am pretty sure you need a new battery. I had the same thing happen 3 days ago and the battery was just done. I replaced that battery and am now good to go.

My problem is a little different. When I plug the charger in, all three banks light up and it looks like they are charging fine. When the batteries are charged, two banks go green and the third blinks red. I switched the cables on two of the batteries and the new battery started blinking red. Swapped batteries, no change. Have come to the conclusion that it is the charger, only two banks charging. I just charge, swap the cables and charge again. Probably have to spring for a new charge someday.
