OKUMA, VS ?

Post by Guy Kelley »

I have been thing about upgrading some of my reels.
I currently own all shimano
Iam tired of spending $150 more or less on a reel.
Yes I know about Daiwa.
If any of yous own or use OKUMA whats your thought or opinions about em ?
By the time I hook a reel & Rod together it's over 3 bills then line at 15 to 25 $ it's just starting to get to me that I got to spend all that money plus with the cost of gas etc. Iam not sponsored by any body, Just love to fish. I need some new rods too, so its really going to hurt the wallet.........options on rods too would be great. at less than $125.00 ea, It seems to be harder to spend less on good quality, but its always easy to spend more

I love my Okuma swimbait setup. 7'6 XH Guide Select rod and IDX-400 reel. They have great customer support so I would be willing to buy more of their products. You can still get a Shimano baitcast reels for under $125.00. I own a Citica D and love it, is very much like the old green Curado, but with the new over sized gears and a superfree spool. Look at Phlueger as well they have some very nice reels that wont break the bank.

As for rods Shimano Claris rods are great for the price.

I have owned a few of the Okuma VS' and for the money was impressed with their over all peformance. And thier So Cal customer service department is exceptional. However, I would be hard pressed to replace my Shimano Curado's with any reel other than thier equivalent or one higher in the Shimano line-up.

buy used and be patient.... I've been fortunet so far.

imo the Daiwa Advantages are the best bang for the buck....strap it on one of their Light & Tough rods and your sittin' pretty for a great price.

as for the Okumas I've got a crankin' stick and two swimbait rods all from the guide select series...they don't win in the weight dept, but are comparable to the Clarus line in terms of the sensitivity and warrenty.

I've opted for cheaper reaction bait sticks and shelled out for the worm, jig, and dropshot rods....can I tell the difference you bet but the money saved goes towards reels and tackle.

check out the BPS Crankin' Stick if you got the monkey on your back I picked up two of them and say they are just as good as the Okumas and Clarus'

I use Okuma also and I believe in there products. If you ever have any problem they are quick to take care of it  A 99 dollar rod will not break the bank and even comes with a life time warranty. :D
Best of luck!

I agree with bassindon69!

I have 2 7'11" Guide Select swimbait rods, 7' EVx crank bait, 6'10" Evx drop shot, 7' EVx Carolina rig and going to buy 7'6" EVx flipping, 6'8" EVx Spinnerbait rods. I started out with the swimbait rod and got the rest later. The fact you can get there high end rods for under $100 and the life time warranty sold me. There EVx line of rods are great! The feel and weight is prefect for how I fish. Im just now starting to purchase there reels. So far all I have i the V-system spinning reel and love it. Next step is to replace my Pflueger trion and BPS Jonny Morris reels

Guy
I have been fortunate enough to be on the Okuma Team for the last 8 years, even if I wasn't I would still stand behind Okuma and use there products. I have been using the VS's for about 18 months now and they are holding up nice. I am not very good with my equipment either. My tackle gets beat up and let me tell you these are tough reels. Okuma is a great company and they stand by there product. Get a VS you'll be happy. As for the rod. What class rod are you looking for. Okuma has a lot to offer now and I can probably point you in the right direct.

I have two VS 200 reels that I bought off Richard's Supply on eBay for $160 shipped. I love 'em.

For me, the reel I use depends on what I'm trying to throw.
I have both Shimano Cacuttas, and Quantum Cabos for swimbaits.
I use mostly Quantum E600s, and some Quantum KVDs for most of my fishing.
I have three Pflueger Summit reels for throwing light stuff on 8lb flouro. I throw Orbit 80s, 1/8 oz jigworms, and drop shot with these reels, no problem. My partner put me onto them. He throws Itos and Pixies for light stuff, on Light and Tough rods. But he doesn't have kids in school, like me.
For $160, the Pflueger Summit is a steal for light stuff. I should mention, although I used to throw nothing but split shot on spinning reels, I don't throw spinning any more if I can help it. For some reason, it ties up my upper back something awful. So I was searching for a baitcaster that I could use for light stuff. And the Pflueger Summit is it, and at a reasonable price.
I've read about Okuma, and they sound like great reels. I prefer the E600 Quantums, which aren't made any more. But that's just me.

I fish the Alumina series spinning reels, as well as a V-system. The V-reel is the top of their line, 13 bearings, I think, smooth. The Aluminas work well. Okuma makes reels at several price points...I'd watch out for the cheaper ones, if I were going to fish the reel hard day-in, day-out.

I bought the wife an Okuma glass Crankin stick. She likes it fine.
