New Rods and reels, Whats yall picks

Post by Dom »

Well after a couple years off and one 73 camaro RS and one Jeep TJ built and one 1/4 scale rc car sold :D

I have decided I want to get back into fishing I plan on buying a boat in the next couple of months and also new rods and reels

I see the Revo has been the top reel it seems since I have been gone but then I seen the Curados are still getting rave reviews but the price has gone up my question is which reel is better the Revo or the Curado? I seen the Revo STX for 99.99 online but the cheapest curado I am seeing is 150-160.00 ! Is the curado reel really worth the extra coin?

I dont want junk, but dont need top of the line either.

Plan on fishing some local open team tournaments on the Delta with my son (he will be 9) this year so figure its time to start breaking him in for that long hard road to "PRO"

As for rods I think I am gonna stick with Kistler, still good rods?

Thanks and Tight lines Dom

IMHO you should be comparing the Shimano Citica 200E to the Revo STX and not the Curado E. For only having three bearings, the new citica E is a great reel, and at $119 retial, it is an sweet deal. The Curdao E series is awesome too, but also another $60 hike in price. I have both the new citica and curado E series. I am in the process of selling my old curados to make room for the new. I am very happy with the new E series. As far as rods are concerned, I would recomend the new line of Dobyns rods. They are coming out in the next couple of weeks and they should be awesome. I am currently fishing last years dobyns rods and I love them. The new ones should be even better. Good luck!

+1 for the Citica.
A couple of years ago I asked my wife for a new reel for Christmas. I wanted a Curado (I already had a "Greenie") but couldn't justify the almost $200. for the "D", so I asked for a Citica. Every bit as smooth as my old green Curado. Liked it so much I bought another one and now that the Curado "E" is out, even though they lowered the price by 20 bucks from the "D" I think I'll stick with the Citica.

Reels....hard to beat the new Curado E. I got one in November and love it..... the performance, size, and style is outstanding. For my next reel, I am going to try the already mentioned new Citica. The tackletour guys say its pretty much the same in performance as the Curado, but doesnt cast real light baits quite as well as the Curado. We'll see, but it sounded like the difference was only slight.

Rods....I never hear anyone complain about Kistler, that would be a good choice. They have nice sticks and some good customer service. I just really like the Powell MAX rods alot, I started using them when they first came out and havent looked back. Amazing performance, and very simple and minimalistic! The new MOJO Bass rods from St Croix look interesting as well, you might check those out!

You know, you just can't beat the value in the new Citica E. I've had both the Curado E and Citica E on my table. Both of these new reels have really been bullet proofed. My quess is an easy 12-20
year lifespan on both of these units.

Hope this helps,

I would go and get some powell rods they are very sensitive and light. But the new mojo rods by st. croix are very light and a cheap rod to buy. I would go with the revo's they are light and fit perfectly in your palm.

I wouldn't know about that, and don't plan to find out... after Abu's fiasco with the Eon and the run-around I got trying to receive the one I ordered, I vowed never to buy another Abu product. I went to Shimano and never looked back :D

don't overlook the Shimano Crucial rod line, outstanding rods with free lifetime replacement for $130 -$180 msrp. Plus superb support here in the Shimano forum. It's a win-win-win situation

This isn't the first in here and the swimbait forum has a lot of refreshed topics and they seem to create new responses, and yes, a whole new meaning.

It seems like everytime there is a debate or question for rods and reels, it is a majority Shimano reel people, and then Dobyns or Powell rods. I have always used Bass Pro stuff because of my budget. So when I got sponsored by them, the transition was easy, but I have never had an issue with any of their rods or reels, and I think they make some of the best stuff for the money. I would definitely look into something for your son from BPS. The new dual break system reels will help him with learning a baitcast reel, and they always have sales. They used to make a Pro Lite reel, but have replaced it with the Carbonlite. I loved the old ones. The new ones are good, I just don't like the handle. The Rick Clunn stuff is by far the best for the money. But I use all the gold signature series reels and the old Pro Lites. Go to BPS and try them out, they have Shimano and every other reel too. Find out who the local pro is to the store and see if he will let you try some stuff, I do all the time here in Vegas. I have switched a lot of anglers

What ever brand of new rod you buy, if it does not have Micro-Guides you are cheating yourself... I think Micro-Guides have changed the game!! I really like the new Kistler Z-Bone series and Micro-Mag series...

I cant stand those things. I have enough trouble seeing the regular eyes, there is no way I could string a rod with those micro guides. Then again I love the rods I have so no need to change.

I don't see micro guides for all applications, maybe for some, I like pflueger president reels and powell rods, great performance and quailty for a fair price.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

Starting out and not wanting to spend a lot of money for a set up I'd go with the new Curado E series reels and the Dobyns Savvy rods or IRods. These you can get for great prices and the Curado E's last a long time!

Id add to this, or dispute it. First of all, the Abu Revo's are equal in alot of ways, and head and shoulders ahead in drag comparisons. Ive fished both for years, there really is no comparison. Revos cast at least as good, how ever the drags are in no way comparable. Ive lost far too many fish on Curado's due to slipping drags even when locked down. You decide. Lets face it the E series is not economical at all.
As far as rods, the Irods are way behind the others. I bought one for comparison. While they are a decent rod, and the action is great, it weighs a ton compared to others. Personally I prefer Powell, the 7105 is very close in the action department and much lighter. I dont fish Dobyns rods but Id assume they are very nice also.
Fishing should be fun.
