Need your opinion on pflueger reels

Post by RipnRog »

I am looking at getting a few of the Purist reels in left hand. I will first say that I have always used shimano reels but as I am just coming back into fishing I can not believe the prices as well as it seems as though the Shimano reels are heavier than they used to be. This reel has 8 ball bearings and weighs a mear 7.5 ounces. Please let me know if any of you have used this reel and what you think of it or Pflueger in general.

Thanx in advance Rodger

I have 2 of their President spinning reels........extremely nice reels for well under $100!! I have no experience w/ their baitcasters but from just playing with them I was quite impressed, especially w/ the President and Supreme. I will definitely be trying one of those in the future. I'm a Shimano-aholic, but I'm always open to new reels as long as they arent Daiwa or Abu LOL

I own three Pflueger reels currently and have had as many as six or seven in my fishing arsenal. I have two Presidents and one Supreme. I have owned a Purist and it is a real nice real(great price). I love the smoothness of all the Pflueger reels and the wonderful castability of all the reels. I have never had one problem with my Pfluegers. The only concern I have is over the long term, there is no one around that does the maintainenece and repairs on the Pfluegers in this area. I have heard that once you go into a Pflueger to make a repair, they are never the same. This is why I switched over to Shimano recently. Outside of the Shimano Chronarch 100 B, the President is the smoothest casting real I have ever used. I have a Zillion(got for Christmas and have yet to try it out) , 50 MG's, Curado 100D's, Citicas, Castaics and none of these are as smooth as the President. For what you want to pay, the Purist is a good reel.

Gene hooked up a Kistler rod with a Pflueger for my son's christmas presant.

Lukes first cast all he said was "wow !! Thats the smoothest reel I have ever casted" So I took a cast with it- Wow ! They make a smooth casting reel ! Image
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

Hello
I've had two baitcasters neither of which I could get dialed in. I sent them to pflueger and they replaced them with newer models but the same thing occurred. That being said, I have three of the spinning reels which I feel are great reels.

You should check out the new Abu Garcia Revo. They have one that's $99. These reels are flat out awesome and that $99 one is probably one of the best bangs for the buck on any reel out there right now. They have a left hand version as well. Good luck

I'm using the Revo STX now, & I like it quite a bit! I'll probably buy an 'S' in the next few weeks...We had the $99 'S' next to the $199 Curado...& found it every bit as smooth, if not a tad more so...That said, I'm gonna fish mine hard, see how it holds up. Check out the Okuma Alumina at about $89 while you're out banging for bucks...
It's just a beating.....till you fight back.

I've had two Pflueger Summit baitcasters and one Supreme for about nine months now. I use them every time out.
The thumb bar is a little higher than the Quantums and Shimanos I have, but the reels are all great.
I throw Orbit 80's with one, and 1/8oz. jigworms with another, and they are a dream to cast, both on 8lb flouro.
They throw light ripbaits on 8lb flouro as easily as my partner's Sol, and almost as well as his see-through Ito.
The Summits have a 7/1 gear ratio, so they bring in the lure quickly when it's out of the strike zone, but the best part is how light and easy to cast they are. I can throw a light ripbait all day and not feel it at the end of the day.
They all have both centrifugal and magnetic brakes. I turn the magnets off completely, unless there's a big wind, like the Santa Anas we had three weeks ago.
The face is open, so it's easy to deal with a birdsnest when (not if) it happens.
They seem to be pretty sturdy. I'm hard on my stuff, and these reels have held up fine so far.
Hope this helps.

I have 3 of the President wlp left hand bait casters and really like them I just had all 3 apart to service and oil and have not had a problem . I would think anyone that does reel repair would work on them or you can send them back to Pflueger for service . I bought mine for around $90 ea. on-line . Here is a link to an article I read that helped me decide on these reels . When I bought the President was top of the line .

Hater!! :D :D

Actually, I was given a Pflueger Trion baitcaster 3-4 years ago, before the Supreme and President was released. The reel works very well and landed bass up to 7lbs with ease. I wouldn't hesitate to try the reels out. The good news is that just about every manufacturer makes a decent reel in the $100 price point, so it's hard to go wrong. I would suggest bringing in the rod you plan to pair up the reel with to get a sense of how it balances.

Have fun.
