Nail weights?

Post by Salcone »

I'm looking to start fishing a wacky rigged Senko with a nail weight in one end and heard finishing nails would work as weights and were cheaper than the tungsten "fishing" weights that sell for 6 bucks a pack. What size/kind of nail weights will work and approx. what weight do they equivilate to? Or am I wasting my time and $ and should just go buy the real thing?

Thanks!

Just use the nails. Trust me its waaaaay cheaper. Plus you can buy a few different sizes and have 100+ of each. If you ever need finishing nails at home it always helps. One tip though, If you put them in your tackle box, sprinkle baby powder on them. They rust really bad if you dont. And dont forget your wire cutters on the boat. Oh yeah and wear your glasses when you clip them because they fly off when you clip them. 8)

The nail weights designed to be used as fishing weights come crimped so that you can bust off how much you need.

recently, a small 1/16th oz weight or less was all they wanted, just enough to have it drift down head first.

The nails work fine, you dont want to leave them on after a trip as tehy will rust inside your bait. If you need a heavier wieght then the ones that Mike sent a link for work really well.

The Lunker city weights are fast and easy. I tried nails...they work but they are a hassel to store and they do rust easy.

I always keep a few different size rolls of lead wire/solder in my termial bag. I find many uses including nail weighting, balancing and tuning crankbaits, and even balancing rods are quick and easy on the water.

If you have a shakee head mold (the kind without the wire coils) you can just pour blanks in different sizes. Of course I powdercoat em to match different worms and clip the heads flat on some so they really stand up nice. The 1/8th oz slot on any football head mold makes a nice nose weight also. Pennys per 100 :)

Watched a young fellow last year at a Pro-Am, using nail weights in his worms. Caught the heck out of fish. How in the world do you properly rig this way to fish worms ?

Thanks

This is a top secret that can't be shared;
1. cut off the head of the worm about a 1/4" so it is flat.
2. insert the nail weight into the flat cut off surface of the head of the worm until it is about 1/16" past the flat cut surface.
3. wacky hook the worm about 1 to 1 1/2" back from the worm head.
4. use a Gamakatsu wide gap weedless finesse hook, size appropriate for the line and worm size.
5. cast and let the worm swim to the bottom. Lift the worm and let it swim back down. You don't need to shake it, this is a lift, swim and stop presentation.

Thanks for that tip Tom,

You guys are bound and determined to find ways to put us hand-poured guys out of business! Get double the use out of a used lure. Ha, ha, ha.

Great tip

Get yourself a roll of wire solder, not CORED SOLDER. Works great
