Must-have Swimbaits

Post by FishDiver »

OK, you guys have convinced me to give swimbaits a serious go. If you could only throw five swimbaits/wakebaits what would they be? Please give size info too.

What do think of this for an inexpensive rod? http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage ... DHBBS.html
I have a Calcutta 250. Is this too small if I spool it with 50# PowerPro?

i have the 7'9 heartland rod. its good for lighter baits like 7" slammer or 6" osprey. hudds, and heavier baits are a bit too heavy. but you can still chuck em with it. good starting rod

7" MS Slammer Baby Bass
6" Bass Trix Paddle Tail Baby Bass & Rainbow Trout
9" Osprey White & light trout
8" BBZ Fast Sink Rainbow Trout
4" River to sea Bottom Walker Shad

The Osprey and BBZ may be too big for that rod but you will catch a lot of good fish on the others.

Baits:

1. Huddleston deluxe 8"
2. Basstrix/ spintrix
3. Big Hammer
4. Beserkbaits
5. ABT lures
6. AC lures

Colors: white. rainbow trout, and bass

Rod: Dobyn's 795 SBMT - 806, 807 depending on size... I bought the 807 for big stuff...but the 795 would probably be better for mosts tuff.

Dont use 50lb braid with swimbaits, go with 65-80 if you want to use braid. I like to use 65lb on my small swimbaits and 25lb mono for the bigger baits. If you do run 50lb go with a 20-25lb top shot about 10' long. My favorite baits are the 4pc triple trout, bull shad, lunker punker, wake jr, baby wake and hyper hering, must have baits are the lunker punker(wood), and wake jr. in my opinion.

osprey top hook 6 and 7 inch, rainbow colors, or for the delta- white
huddleston. I perfer the 6 inch baits over the 8s-mostly trout but I do have some shad colors.
BBZ the shad, and the 8 inch trout patterns in all 3 sink rates and get the 6 when it comes out, I have seen it in action, it rocks.
Jerrry rego 6 and 8 inch baits-trout patterns
Roboworm 5 inch fresh water-color they all work

if some on else can see your hand moving while your reeling the baits in , Your reeling to fast!
listen to that gut feeling!!!

Take a look at Okuma guide series swimbait rods; GS-C- 7101H or 7111H depending on the handle style you prefer. Good rod for $110, lifetime warranty.
Swimbaits should be about the same size as the prey the bass, where you fish, are targeting. You need both weedless and open water, hard and soft style lures. A variety of top, slow and faster sinkers to work the entire water column.
6" & 8" Huddleston Deluxe, 8" 3:16 Mission fish, 6" & 8" BBZ-1, 5" Matt lures 6" Basstrix are all good brands to get you started.
Use a good brand of 20# mono or FC line, aviod braid unless you are fishing heavy weed areas. The reason is simple; you need the best casting line to make long casts. Braid can be a nightmare when casting into the wind with a heavy lure.
Your reel should be OK, however a wider spool is better for the larger diameter line.
Good luck.

Some guy

You ar right the triple trout does need to be mentioned the only problem I had with them was for a couple years they were hard (for me) to get ahold of and it should be on any swimbait list, it slips my mind for that reason.

You are right, the 7" baby bass triple trout would be good up north.

Triple Trout is a must-have. Must have the money to buy one. I WANT ONE!

Huddlestons & Lunker Punkers, Mattlures, Triton Mike's...

Bettencourt Baits Rodent is worth a look. Swims like a Muskrat.

A must-have in my box is the Mission Fish. I can fish it in so many ways. I love to toss it into trees and bushes and fish it like a pig n' jig. Because it's weedless, I can free it 99.9% of the time. Doesn't swim like a Hudd, but where I throw it, it doesn't have to. :!:

I bought one of those rods from Tacklewarehouse, and sent it back.
It has a really soft tip, and a soft, parrabolic action. It's made for boucing slamon rigs off the bottom, not casting swimbaits.
You can sling them with it, but it's more of a lob cast. No accuracy or distance.
Check out the Okuma swimbait rods. They are the best value, and good rods.

The Okuma GS-C-7111H mention earlier is their 7'11" big bait casting rod and casts swimbait up to 3 oz easily, 5 oz heavy swimbaits are a push with rod, the XH would be better. Check out Lamiglas XL 7116C , lighter weight rod and about the same price ($120) from TW. This is a 6 power rod that handles up to 2 oz swimbaits.
